Aaron Ramsdale: from award-winning Arsenal keeper to Southampton's fourth choice
Aaron Ramsdale has not played a competitive game of football for five months and is now the fourth-choice goalkeeper at Championship club Southampton, having been omitted from any of the club's 10 matchday squads this season in the Championship or EFL Cup.
Ramsdale was on the brink of winning the Premier League with Arsenal in April 2023 but made a costly error that gave away the opening goal in a 3-3 draw with Southampton at the Emirates Stadium, a result the club say handed the initiative to Manchester City and contributed to Arsenal losing the title. Arsenal signed him from Sheffield United for £24m in August 2021; he made 89 appearances for the club and kept 32 clean sheets and earned places in the PFA team of the year and as goalkeeper of the year at the London Football Awards.
Four months after the Southampton draw, Arsenal signed David Raya and Ramsdale quickly dropped down the pecking order, losing his starting berth after four league games. He made an error in a Premier League match against Brentford that allowed Yoane Wissa to score, although Arsenal recovered to win 2-1 in March 2024; Ramsdale did not play for Arsenal again and was sold to Southampton for £25m in August 2024 after returning from Euro 2024 as an unused substitute for England.
Southampton viewed Ramsdale's arrival as a significant signing for Russell Martin's newly promoted side, valuing his ability on the ball to fit a build-from-the-back approach and citing his previous spells at Sheffield United and Bournemouth as justification. The move did not go to plan: Ramsdale made 30 league appearances as Saints finished bottom of the Premier League with 12 points, conceded 66 goals — the most of any goalkeeper in 2024-25 — and the team recorded the second-lowest points tally in Premier League history that season.
The Southampton relegation was the fourth Ramsdale has suffered, following spells with Chesterfield (on loan in 2017-18), the Cherries in 2019-20 — a season in which he was named Bournemouth player of the year — and then Sheffield United. Clubs have paid a combined £74m in transfer fees for Ramsdale, who has five England caps.
Ramsdale moved on loan to Newcastle United for the 2025-26 campaign but was unable to re-establish himself; he kept just two clean sheets in 23 appearances in all competitions, featured 12 times in the Premier League, and neither he nor Nick Pope secured the number-one spot. He also conceded seven goals in a single match, a 7-2 Champions League last-16 defeat by Barcelona, the most he has ever conceded in one game.
Southampton boss Tonda Eckert has made Ramsdale's place in the squad clear, saying: "The reality is that Rambo's story with the football club started before myself. We've had honest conversations from the first day of pre-season until the very last day of the transfer window. The expectations for him are clear to support the team in the best way and he's been very professional in doing that so far." Daniel Peretz is Eckert's number one, George Long the second choice and Jamie Jones has returned to the club mainly as a training goalkeeper. Ramsdale is reported to have a good relationship with Eckert, the coaching staff and the other goalkeepers, and he has said he believes there is a route back into the first team and is willing to fight for his place until at least January; he turned down summer loan offers in England, Spain and Italy to remain with his family after the birth of his second child.
Asmir Begovic, who worked with Ramsdale at Bournemouth, offered his perspective on the situation: "First of all, Aaron's a fantastic goalkeeper. We first worked together about nine years ago and since then he's been on an incredible ride where he's performed at the highest level. I remember my remit when I came into Bournemouth was to mentor and set a tone for some of the younger goalkeepers, one of which was Aaron Ramsdale." He added: "I had a few spells where I was frozen out at a club for a short time but I can't really relate to Aaron's situation... He has to be ready for the long term and if the chance to move elsewhere comes up, he's ready. I'd love to see Aaron playing again and hopefully it happens in January but I'm fully aware that it won't be a straightforward situation."
