Aaryavir Sehwag has been appointed captain of Delhi’s Under-19 side for the Vinoo Mankad Trophy, the Delhi & District Cricket Association announced on Saturday. The 18-year-old takes on the role ahead of the tournament in Visakhapatnam.

The appointment is Sehwag’s first major leadership assignment and comes soon after his initial exposure to India Under-19 cricket. He was part of the Indian squad for the three-match Youth ODI series against Australia in Rajkot last month and is the son of former India opener Virender Sehwag.

In Rajkot, Sehwag scored 28 off 26 in a rain-shortened opener as India edged Australia by seven runs, made 47 in the second match before being run out three runs short of a half-century, and was dismissed for 34 in the third; he finished the series with 109 runs from three innings.

At senior domestic level he has had limited opportunities, appearing twice for West Delhi Lions in the 2026 Delhi Premier League and scoring 24 runs. In age-group cricket he recorded 297 for Delhi against Meghalaya in the Cooch Behar Trophy in 2024.

After the Australia series he acknowledged that he had failed to convert his opportunities into substantial innings and said he had learnt the importance of building long innings by breaking them into different phases. The Delhi captaincy presents another chance for him to translate starts into larger scores and places added responsibility on a young batter who has drawn attention because of his surname.

Sehwag will lead a 16-member Delhi squad that includes Arnav Bugga as vice-captain: Aaryavir Sehwag (c), Tanmay Chaudhary, Arnav Bugga (vc), Dhanya Nakra, Uday Chawla, Garv Kumar, Abhiraj Gagan Singh (wk), Tarun Singh (wk), Aaryan Sharma, Ojasdeep Singh, Kirit Kaushik, Varun Vanjani, Rudra Dev Yadav, Pradyuman Sanan, Parth Raj, Shantanu Yadav.

The team will begin its Vinoo Mankad Trophy campaign in Visakhapatnam from October 8, with the new captain aiming to build on his recent India Under-19 experience and make an impact in domestic cricket.
