Abdoul Ouattara: Ipswich Town sign Ivorian youngster from Strasbourg for €20 million

Ipswich Town completed the signing of Abdoul Ouattara from RC Strasbourg on August 17, 2026, paying a €20 million fee and agreeing a contract that runs until 2031 as they prepare for life in the Premier League after promotion. The 21-year-old Ivorian is a youth international for Ivory Coast and joins a club that has added eight first-team players this summer.
The Tractor Boys have been active in the transfer market since securing promotion to the Premier League, targeting midfield reinforcements among other areas. Ipswich had already signed Florentino Luis from Burnley for £16 million and Sasa Lukic from Fulham for £9 million earlier in the window. Ouattara arrives following a breakthrough season with Strasbourg in Ligue 1. Gary O’Neil, who coached him at Strasbourg, will be his head coach again at Ipswich Town this season.
Ouattara was born in Zoukpangbeu, Ivory Coast, and moved to France at the age of 10. He began his youth career with FC Niederschaeffolsheim before joining Strasbourg’s academy in 2018. Four years after joining the academy he was promoted to Strasbourg’s reserve side, where he became a regular fixture.
He signed his first professional contract in 2023 and made his senior debut in October 2024 in a match against Paris Saint-Germain. In his debut season with Strasbourg’s first team he made 17 Ligue 1 appearances, scoring one goal and providing one assist. His involvement increased the following season as he established himself in the senior squad.
Under Gary O’Neil at Strasbourg, Ouattara made 43 appearances across all competitions, including 28 in Ligue 1, and recorded four goals and one assist. That campaign is described in the club announcement as his breakthrough season. O’Neil’s role as his coach at Strasbourg and now at Ipswich Town was noted in the transfer coverage.
Ouattara’s positional history includes spells as a striker, a winger and an attacking midfielder during his development. He primarily operates on the right side of midfield but was also utilised as a right-back at Strasbourg and can play at left-back. The club announcement emphasised his versatility as a reason for the signing.
On joining Ipswich Town Ouattara said in a press release: “The Premier League is the best league in the world and as soon as I knew the opportunity was there, to play in England under a manager I have already enjoyed working with, I jumped at it. I am still young but have had some good experiences already and I can’t wait to meet the fans and my teammates and get started.”
