Bengal cricketer and Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel was arrested in Hooghly on Tuesday in connection with a rape case filed by a medical student. He was taken into custody by police, formally arrested after being questioned, sent for a medical examination and produced before the Chinsurah Court.

The complaint, lodged by the woman at Mogra Police Station, alleges Porel established a physical relationship with her on the promise of marriage and later recorded intimate moments and intimidated her. The FIR refers to an incident in Delhi on April 2, 2026, and states the complainant was allegedly confined and denied food, leaving her physically weak and in need of immediate medical attention. These claims have not been established in court.

The FIR includes a detailed account of the complainant’s condition while in custody. “Abishek Porel illegally confined the complainant. He denied her food and deliberately kept her isolated. As a result... the complainant became physically weak and was unable to walk properly. Despite having a flight... she was compelled to seek immediate medical attention due to the injuries sustained," the FIR against Porel read. The document was submitted to Mogra Police Station by the woman.

The complainant has said she was in a relationship with Porel and that their families had discussed marriage before the relationship broke down. According to her complaint, the breakdown followed her learning about his relationships with other women. The FIR lists allegations of sexual assault, criminal intimidation and the recording of private moments, and alleges private material was later used to threaten or intimidate her.

After the complainant approached the Calcutta High Court, the court directed police to take steps to arrest Porel and ordered Mogra Police to seize Porel's electronic devices to prevent circulation of photographs or other private material linked to the complainant. Police had already seized a pen drive and sent it for forensic examination as part of the investigation.

Porel was taken into custody on Tuesday and formally arrested after being questioned by police; he underwent a medical examination and was produced before the Chinsurah Court. Porel represents Bengal in domestic cricket and Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League.

Porel will now face the legal proceedings arising from the complaint, and the allegations against him remain to be tested through the ongoing investigation and subsequent court process.
