Abishek Porel denied bail by Chinsurah Court, remanded to 14 days in rape case

Abishek Porel was denied bail and remanded to 14 days' judicial custody by the Chinsurah Court on Friday, August 14, in a rape case. The 23-year-old wicketkeeper-batter, who plays for Bengal and IPL franchise Delhi Capitals, was arrested after a complaint alleging sexual relations under the pretext of marriage and misconduct.

Porel has been under investigation since June 23, when a young woman studying medicine in Karnataka filed the complaint at the Mogra Police Station. Mogra Police first produced him in court on August 11 and he was placed in police custody for three days following that appearance. The arrest that led to the current remand followed directions from higher courts after the complainant sought intervention.

Sources said the complainant and Porel had been in a relationship for three and a half years, had planned to marry and had travelled abroad together. Around 18 months ago a dispute between them prompted police involvement, but no FIR was lodged at that time.

Police officers visited Porel’s Chandannagar residence multiple times without locating him, according to sources. The complainant subsequently moved the Calcutta High Court, which directed Mogra Police to arrest him immediately. Acting on that order, police arrested Porel in Kolkata and registered a case under multiple sections.

After his initial three-day police remand concluded, Porel was produced in court again on August 14. The Chinsurah Court rejected his bail application and remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days.

Porel will remain in judicial custody until the next hearing, when the court will address further proceedings in the case.
