On 2026-09-23, Microsoft and Xbox announced in an official statement that Activision is developing the next Halo game; a new rumored report from Hollywood Reporter described the project as "a full-feature, mainline installment."

Activision, the studio behind the Call of Duty games, was named by Microsoft and Xbox as lead developer for the next Halo entry, and the company has said the new game will be developed by a newly formed team that is separate from the development of 'Call of Duty'. Initially many observers thought the project might be another remake similar to Halo: Campaign Evolved, but recent reports suggest a different direction.

The Hollywood Reporter rumor does not clarify whether the Activision project will be a direct sequel to Halo Infinite or a standalone title within the same universe. Reports indicate the project could include both a single-player campaign and a multiplayer mode, which would contrast with Halo: Campaign Evolved, a release that did not include multiplayer and was focused on reusing the original game's story.

Halo Infinite opened with a continuation of the story from Halo 5: Guardians and introduced a new mystery character described as "the Endless." Separately, Halo Studios announced that future Halo projects will be developed on Unreal Engine and that they were in the process of making a multiplayer update.

Activision has stated its main aim is "to deliver the greatest Halo game ever." Xbox has confirmed that Activision is leading development on the next Halo title, though neither Activision nor Xbox has provided a release timeline or detailed gameplay information.

For now, no launch date or further gameplay details have been revealed; the game might be in the early stages of planning or development and an official reveal from Activision could still be years away.
