Adkar and Bhosale become first all-Indian pair to reach WTA Tour doubles final
Vaishnavi Adkar and Rutuja Bhosale became the first all-Indian pairing to reach a WTA Tour-level doubles final when they beat second seeds Weronika Falkowska and Alana Smith 6-2, 2-6, 10-8 in the Chennai Open semi-final on November 7, 2026.
No all-Indian combination had previously reached a final on the main WTA Tour; earlier close calls included Shikha and Neha Uberoi reaching the finals of the 2005 Sunfeast Open and Guangzhou Open with Neha representing the United States, making them an Indo-American pairing. Sania Mirza won 43 doubles titles in her career but never partnered an Indian for those triumphs. At levels below the main Tour, Ankita Raina and Karman Thandi won a WTA 125 doubles title in 2018, and Prarthna Thombare reached three WTA 125 finals alongside Dutch partner Arianne Hartono.
Adkar and Bhosale dominated the first set, capitalising on errors from Falkowska and Smith to build a 4-1 lead. The Indians made the opening break in the third game after Adkar attacked Smith's second serve with a fierce return that Falkowska failed to retrieve, and Bhosale consolidated with a comfortable hold. A subsequent forehand error from Falkowska handed another break opportunity, which Bhosale converted with a powerful forehand return to establish a double-break advantage and close out the set 6-2.
Momentum shifted in the second set as Adkar and Bhosale missed break chances in the third and fifth games, allowing Falkowska and Smith to grow in confidence. Adkar lost serve at love in the sixth game after committing two consecutive double faults, and the Indian pair struggled to finish points at the net as the second seeds tightened their grip. Adkar, who had earlier required medical attention in her singles second-round match, took a medical timeout for treatment to a strapped left thigh, and Bhosale came under serve pressure as Falkowska and Smith converted the first of three break points to level the match at one set apiece.
The match-deciding super tie-break saw Falkowska and Smith race to a 3-0 lead before Adkar and Bhosale fought back. At 6-8 the Indians slipped after a double fault from Bhosale, who immediately followed with a forehand winner past Smith to narrow the gap. Adkar then produced a winning volley to earn match point and sealed the victory with a forehand down the line, prompting celebrations for the home pair.
With the 6-2, 2-6, 10-8 semi-final win, Adkar and Bhosale advance to the doubles final of the WTA 250 Chennai Open, becoming the first all-Indian duo to contest a WTA Tour-level doubles final.
