The All India Football Federation defended its decision to prioritise India's friendly against Brazil, due to be played at Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium on October 3, over taking part in the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 after India withdrew from the tournament last week. The federation also denied allegations that the withdrawal carried a predetermined financial penalty.

The AIFF said the Brazil fixture was approved through the appropriate institutional processes and argued the match would benefit the national team and Indian football. "The match will give a morale boost to the Indian national team while driving fans towards Indian football, the impact of which is unquantifiable," the AIFF said, adding that "The match is a mutually agreed international sporting opportunity between two football federations and should not be portrayed as a one-sided arrangement." The ASEAN Cup runs from September 21 to October 6, a schedule clash the federation said prevented India from competing while also preparing for the Brazil game, a decision that prompted questions about sporting and financial consequences.

The federation dismissed suggestions that India's withdrawal had automatically resulted in a financial fine and condemned what it described as "incorrect claims that its decision not to participate in the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 has resulted in a predetermined financial penalty or fine". The AIFF said those assertions were not accurate and pushed back against narratives presenting the friendly as a unilateral benefit.

The AIFF signalled particular concern about figures being circulated about its finances and demanded supporting documentation for any claims. "The AIFF is also concerned about the public circulation of unverified figures and claims regarding its finances without any supporting basis or documentation," the federation said, urging that financial statements and allegations be backed by verifiable information.

Addressing public criticism, the AIFF said it accepted debate about Indian football but insisted that commentary on its finances be factual. "The AIFF respects the democratic right to express opinions on Indian football. However, statements concerning the Federation's finances and use of funds must be based on facts and verifiable information," it said, warning against unsubstantiated accusations.

The federation added that the spread of factually incorrect statements could harm India's reputation and standing both domestically and internationally and suggested some critics may be misinformed. "We believe those who have made these claims have the best interests of Indian football in mind and may be misinformed," the federation said, and stated it would consider "appropriate legal remedies" against those knowingly publishing or circulating false and defamatory statements.

India will not participate in the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 because the tournament runs from September 21 to October 6 and clashes with the Brazil friendly; the national team is scheduled to face Brazil at Salt Lake Stadium on October 3.
