Alcaraz to face Shapovalov in Japan Open 2026 quarter-final in Tokyo

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz meets Denis Shapovalov in a Japan Open 2026 quarter-final at Ariake Tennis Forest Park in Tokyo on Sunday, October 4. The match is scheduled to be played on Centre Court.
Alcaraz is chasing a defence of his Tokyo crown, a feat not achieved by a man since Pete Sampras in 1993-94. He opened the week with a 7-6(1), 4-6, 6-1 win over Alex Michelsen and in his following match trailed Matteo Arnaldi 2-6 in the first-set tie-break before saving four set points to take the opener and then winning the second set 6-1. The World No. 3 is 7-1 since returning from a four-month injury layoff and has produced slow starts in both matches here.
Shapovalov, a 46th-ranked left-hander, beat Sho Shimabukuro and Alejandro Tabilo to reach his 50th tour-level quarter-final. He also reached the semi-finals in Chengdu last week.
The pair have met twice previously on tour, with Alcaraz victorious on both occasions without dropping a set; their most recent meeting was at the 2025 Indian Wells. The Canadian has not beaten a top-five player since his win over Casper Ruud in Dallas in 2025.
The quarter-final is scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM local time (09:30 AM IST) on October 4. FanCode and Tennis Channel will stream the match for viewers in India; Sky UK will show the match in the United Kingdom and Tennis Channel will provide live coverage in the United States, with other territories covered by their respective local broadcasters.
The winner of the Alcaraz–Shapovalov quarter-final will play Jaume Munar or Kyrian Jacquet for a place in the final.
