Alex de Minaur records 350th tour-level win in Vienna to set semi with Zverev

Alex de Minaur defeated Matteo Berrettini 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 in the quarter-final of the Vienna Open at the Wiener Stadthalle on October 30, 2026, claiming the 27-year-old’s 350th tour-level victory and earning a semi-final meeting with world No 1-elect Alexander Zverev.
The world No 10 downed Berrettini, who is ranked No 48, in the ATP 500 event to advance. It was de Minaur’s second successive year beating the Italian in Vienna and it strengthened his bid to reach the season-ending ATP Finals, which the article says still lies in the balance. The win also sets up a third match with Zverev in just over a month, to be played on Saturday.
De Minaur escaped a tight opening set by saving a set point at 5-6 and then taking the tiebreak 7-4 after Berrettini put a straightforward put-away into the net. That sequence gave de Minaur the momentum to control the match from the outset of the second set.
At the start of the second set de Minaur saved a couple of break points and then converted the first break of the match when Berrettini produced an embarrassing air-shot on a smash, after which the Italian was unable to recover. The match finished in an hour and three-quarters.
Statistically, the victory rested on de Minaur’s serving: he recorded 71% first serves, an equal-best serving display for the season, and out-aced Berrettini 5-4. “That’s been an emphasis as of late, and I do feel like I’ve got in a good rhythm on serve and feel like I’m confident with what I’m doing,” said de Minaur. “I maybe didn’t serve as well as I would have liked to at the start of the week, but today was a great serving display from me, and you know, hopefully I can keep it going.”
The win made de Minaur the ninth Australian man to reach 350 tour-level wins, joining Lleyton Hewitt (616), John Alexander (591), Rod Laver (576), John Newcombe (568), Ken Rosewall (546), Phil Dent (414), Tony Roche (364) and Pat Rafter (358).
Zverev, who recently lost to de Minaur in the Laver Cup and defeated him in Shanghai, gave a glimpse of form when he beat British Wimbledon hero Arthur Fery 6-0 6-2 in just under an hour in his quarter-final. “Yeah, 100 per cent, that’s the aim,” said de Minaur, pondering his latest chance to beat Zverev for the first time in an individual, rather than team, tournament. “That’s the types of matches that you want to be playing, against the best in the world – and right now he’s the best in the world. So I’m excited for that. Another battle.” Earlier on Friday (Saturday AEDT), Daniil Medvedev secured his place at the Finals for the seventh time by beating Adrian Mannarino 6-2 6-3, setting up a last-four clash with world No 3 Carlos Alcaraz, who defeated Tommy Paul 6-4 7-6 (7-2).
If de Minaur can beat Zverev in Saturday’s semi-final he will move back into the eighth and final qualifying spot for the ATP Finals for a third-straight year, with only the Paris Masters remaining as a qualifying event before the Turin end-of-season showpiece.
