Alun Wyn Jones poised to join Ospreys board

On 15 August 2026, former Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones is poised to return to the Ospreys as a director, with the Swansea-based club expected to announce his appointment next week. The 40-year-old, who retired in 2023, will rejoin the region where he spent the bulk of his playing career.

Jones made his Ospreys debut in 2005, a year after breaking through with Swansea RFC, and during his time as a player helped the club to three titles and an Anglo-Welsh Cup triumph. His return comes as the Ospreys confront uncertainty over the Welsh Rugby Union's plans to reduce the number of professional men's regions to three. Under those proposals, WRU-owned Cardiff and the privately backed Dragons are poised to receive licences, a scenario that would leave the Ospreys competing with the Scarlets for the single western licence.

The Ospreys have publicly criticised the WRU's proposal and said they favour a four-team model, and the club has undergone significant change over the summer. After spending last season in Bridgend, the Ospreys will play at a revamped St Helen's in 2026-27 as part of a joint redevelopment venture with Swansea Council. Those stadium arrangements form part of the club's preparations amid the broader governance dispute.

The region's first home fixture at St Helen's is scheduled to be against the Dragons in the United Rugby Championship on 24 October, with a derby against Cardiff to follow. Those opening matches will come early in the 2026-27 URC campaign and will be the first home fixtures at the redeveloped venue.

Mark Jones's squad has seen notable turnover: the Ospreys have lost Wales captains Dewi Lake and Jac Morgan to Gloucester, while recruiting Wales back Tom Rogers from the Scarlets. The club has also added three Australians — Liam Wright, Lawson Creighton and Lalakai Foketi — and has another move lined up for former Wallabies wing Marika Koroibete.

Last season the Ospreys operated amid off-field uncertainty when owners Y11 Sports and Media attempted to take over Cardiff, a deal that collapsed in April. That episode contributed to a turbulent period for the region ahead of the new campaign.

Jones's expected appointment to the Ospreys board is set to be announced next week, ahead of the club's first scheduled home United Rugby Championship match at St Helen's on 24 October against the Dragons, followed immediately by a derby with Cardiff.
