Andhra and Hyderabad set for tight Ranji Trophy encounter at ACA Stadium, Mulapadu

Andhra and Hyderabad will meet from Sunday at the ACA Stadium in Mulapadu in a Ranji Trophy Elite Group B contest, a fixture billed as a close contest between two sides with a shared cricketing background.

Twelve years after the administrative split that created them, the teams still share language and cricketing culture, a familiarity that will be tested in this match; Andhra arrive with confidence after their opening-round performance against Karnataka. S.V. Rahul and Revanth Reddy put on a 202-run stand to secure a first-innings lead and three points, and the pair resisted on the final day to snuff out Karnataka’s push for a win. Andhra’s spin trio — T. Vijay, Lalith Mohan and Saurabh Kumar — claimed 15 of the 19 wickets that fell in that match.

Hyderabad’s bowlers produced a dominant display in their own opener, with their tweakers accounting for 17 wickets against Tripura. Aniketh Reddy’s five-wicket haul precipitated Tripura’s collapse from 130 for four to 134 all out, and Tanay Thyagarajan’s six-wicket return wrapped up the contest inside eight overs on day three.

On the batting front, Hyderabad will draw confidence from centurions R. Smaran and Karun Nair, whose runs the side will look to build on when confronting Andhra’s bowling attack. The source notes those centuries as a key factor in Hyderabad’s earlier match that affected how they might approach this game.

Leadership and coaching provide additional storylines: Mohammed Siraj will captain Hyderabad before departing for India’s tour of New Zealand and would be aiming for a second win as captain, while Andhra will seek to extend the progress made under head coach Gary Stead, a partnership that produced a quarterfinal finish last year.

Scattered thunderstorms on the eve of the match were reported, a weather element that adds uncertainty to what the coverage describes as a clash likely to be decided by the smallest margins.

The Ranji Trophy Elite Group B fixture between Andhra and Hyderabad is scheduled to begin on Sunday at the ACA Stadium in Mulapadu.
