Angharad Evans takes 100m breaststroke gold in Paris at European Championships

Great Britain’s Angharad Evans won the 100m breaststroke final at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris on 12 August 2026, claiming gold in a championship record time of 1:04.87. The 23-year-old’s swim was also a lifetime best and a new British record.

Evans had already lowered the championship mark in the semi-final before producing the 1:04.87 in the final. Ireland’s Mona McSharry finished second and Italy’s Benedetta Pilato took bronze in the race.

Great Britain’s Filip Nowacki, who won gold for Jersey in the 200m breaststroke at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last month, was the fastest qualifier in the 200m breaststroke semi-final at the European Championships. The 18-year-old posted 2:08.60 in the semis, holding off GB team-mate Greg Butler in the first semi-final, with the 25-year-old also progressing to the final.

Amalie Smith won silver in the 400m individual medley, finishing 0.7 seconds behind Ireland’s Ellen Walshe, while Poland’s Justina Kozan took bronze. The 16-year-old Smith had earlier won gold on Monday in the 4x200m freestyle relay and was part of the 4x100m freestyle relay team that finished fifth.

Italy’s 19-year-old Sara Curtis broke the women’s 50m backstroke world record in the semi-final with a time of 26.63 seconds. Her swim improved the previous world record set by Australia’s Kaylee McKeown three years earlier by 0.23 seconds.

Filip Nowacki and Greg Butler have both advanced to the 200m breaststroke final at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris. That race will decide the medals for the 200m breaststroke.
