Araújo describes Liverpool loan from Barcelona as an ‘ideal move’ after agreeing pay cut

LIVERPOOL, England — Uruguay defender Ronald Araújo completed a season-long loan from Barcelona to Liverpool on Monday, saying the transfer was an “ideal move” and that he had taken a pay cut to facilitate the switch. Liverpool holds an option to buy him for a pre-agreed, reportedly £47 million ($63 million), if the loan proves successful.

Araújo, 27, delivered the assessment to the club website after the move was confirmed. "It was the ideal move for me at this stage in my career. It was a move that was necessary for me to take," Araújo told the club website. "As soon as I heard that interest from Liverpool, everything went into action really, really quickly. I'm super happy to be here and excited to get started." He was named Barcelona captain in January.

Liverpool have targeted defensive reinforcements after the departure of Ibrahima Konate at the conclusion of his contract and recurring issues at right back. For much of last season, the team relied on Virgil van Dijk and Konate almost every match, leaving limited rotation options when injuries or fatigue arose.

The club view Araújo's experience as a solution to that lack of depth. His arrival provides manager Andoni Iraola with an extra senior option who can operate in central defence and cover at right back, widening choices that were less available under predecessor Arne Slot last season.

Additional squad considerations influenced the decision to recruit an experienced defender. Jeremy Jacquet is expected to return to training after a knee injury while Giovanni Leoni is in the final stages of rehabilitation following an ACL injury, reducing immediate defensive availability from within the squad.

Youth prospects Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Mor Ndiaye, both 18, have impressed in preseason but remain inexperienced at senior level; with Joe Gomez not fit for the start of the new Premier League campaign, Iraola required further senior cover at the back. Araújo's presence addresses that immediate need for an experienced defender.

Araújo has already been involved in Barcelona's preseason and is regarded as up to speed; it is understood he will join Liverpool squad training this week as the club integrates him ahead of the new season.
