Archie Brown will start for Fenerbahce against Liverpool in the Champions League on Wednesday at the 48,000-capacity Sukru Saracoglu Stadium, a match he says continues an "unorthodox" journey from the Midlands to European competition.

Born in Birmingham, Brown began his youth career at West Brom before moving to Derby, where he helped the club to their only youth top-flight title and scored a hat-trick in a 5-2 win over an Arsenal U18s side that included Bukayo Saka in the final between the North and South division winners; frustrated by limited first-team chances, he left in 2021 to join Lausanne Sport in Switzerland at 19. "I've had quite an unorthodox journey to get here. I won't say that was always the plan," Brown told BBC Sport, adding he wanted to avoid stagnating on the fringes of senior squads and to experience a new language and culture.

Brown, 24, moved to Belgian side Gent in 2023 and signed for Fenerbahce in a £7m transfer in 2025, joining a Turkish Super Lig side that sit sixth and nine points behind leaders Galatasaray after 10 games. He believes Liverpool under Andoni Iraola will face a difficult atmosphere at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium and has highlighted the challenge the match represents for his team.

Brown pointed to the stadium environment as unlike anything in England, saying: "There are not really any comparisons in English football. There are no stadiums that can replicate the atmosphere. Sometimes it can be difficult trying to communicate with your team-mates because it's so loud and that's especially when the other team have the ball. The only thing I can say to people in England is to come watch a game if you have a chance because it's really special. There are no boring nights in Kadikoy." Liverpool have fond memories of Istanbul from the 2005 Champions League final at the Ataturk Stadium but have lost their past five games against Turkish sides in the city.

Brown has featured prominently for Fenerbahce in Europe, having played every minute of their Champions League campaign this season, and he scored the club's first Champions League goal in 18 years during their draw with Roma. The pressure of playing in Istanbul was illustrated recently when Brown was sent off following a post-match brawl in a derby loss to Galatasaray.

Galatasaray accused Brown of physically attacking captain Abdulkerim Bardakci and Fenerbahce say Brown received a three-match ban while Bardacki was banned for two games. Reflecting on the incident, Brown said: "It was a unique one. I always try to show my passion on the pitch and those derbies are fiery so anything can happen and unfortunately it came out in that way. But that's not my character. Everyone who's seen a Fenerbahce against Galatasaray match knows how intense it is. It's not abnormal for Turkish football, but it's definitely a lesson I have to take. Ultimately I'm disappointed because I've got suspended and the most important thing I can do is is to be there for my team-mates. It was my first red card and hopefully my last."

Versatile across left-back, central defence and midfield, Brown has spoken about the freedom he receives from his coaches. "In the Galatasaray game I played centre-back but in Champions League games, I might be higher up and pop up in different positions," he said. "The good thing about how we play is it gives me a lot of freedom, and I've had a lot of trust from the coaching staff to give the game whatever I feel like it needs. I like to play free and to try put smiles on the fans' faces." He has named Ashley Cole as an inspiration, has represented England at youth level and still hopes to play for the senior side.

Dirk Kuyt, the former Liverpool player now interim Fenerbahce boss, described the match as an exciting opportunity to show Europe what the club can do, and Brown said he was looking forward to facing Liverpool attackers such as Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola: "I love it. You play football to play nights like this against players like these, so I'm excited for the challenge." The next fixture for Brown and Fenerbahce is Wednesday's Champions League meeting with Liverpool at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium.
