Arsenal announce starting lineups for Premier League opener against Coventry City

Arsenal will host Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium on 22nd August to open the 2026-27 Premier League season. The fixture sees Mikel Arteta’s side begin their title defence against the newly promoted Sky Blues.

Mikel Arteta’s team enter the match as the defending Premier League champions and are regarded as favourites for the campaign, while Coventry will aim to avoid the relegation places, with any result higher than 18th described as a decent season for the club. Arsenal defeated Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield last weekend against Enzo Maresca’s side. During the summer the Gunners added Bruno Guimaraes, Piero Hincapie, Christos Tzolis and Illan Meslier, and have also signed England international Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa.

Coventry come into the top flight after winning the Championship with 95 points, finishing 11 points ahead of second-place Ipswich Town. Frank Lampard’s side return to the Premier League for the first time since 2000–01, having been a League Two team as recently as 2017–18. The Sky Blues have made eight signings in the summer window, with Caleb Yirenkyi described as their most expensive acquisition.

Coventry City starting XI: Rushworth (GK); Milan van Ewijk, Thomas, Amenda, Dasilva; Yikrenkyi, Grimes, Onyeka; Tchaouna, Simms, Thomas-Asante. Bench: Wilson (GK), Kitching, Eccles, Torp, Hamer, Sakamoto, Awoniyi, Mason-Clark, Wright, Rudoni.

The Premier League season proper begins after the Community Shield, and Arsenal would be disappointed if they did not secure a comfortable opening-night success at the Emirates. The match will provide the first competitive test for both clubs in the 2026-27 campaign.
