Arsenal beat Coventry 3-0 at Emirates to begin Premier League title defence on 21 August 2026

Arsenal beat Coventry City 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium on 21 August 2026 as they began their Premier League title defence, with fans chanting "champions of England" and new gold signage reading 'Champions' above the ground's entrance.
The club's first league title in 22 years has altered the atmosphere around Emirates Stadium: players were each given an introduction as they came out for their warm-up and both squad and supporters have adopted the confidence from last season's success. Captain Martin Odegaard wrote in the match programme that the silverware had given the team "more confidence" and told Match of the Day: "We don't feel we have to defend anything. We want to do it again and that's the mindset. "Last year is finished now. We want to do it again and we want to attack it and fight for it again."
Manager Mikel Arteta, credited in the report with transforming the club since 2021, recorded a personal milestone in the victory by becoming the fifth manager to reach 150 Premier League wins in fewer than 250 games, after Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho, Jurgen Klopp, and Sir Alex Ferguson. Arteta has also focused on unlocking the Emirates atmosphere to create a more intimidating venue for opponents and acknowledged the role a lively crowd can play, saying: "Let's see when we are 0-0 and when we are maybe losing a game, see how we react. "Today was the start of the game, and the two goals were obviously a good platform for everybody to feel this way. But I think we all learned in the past as well that one really helps the team. "And certainly in this kind of atmosphere in the stadium, it's just a joy to witness and to play football."
Friday's goalscorers were Kai Havertz, Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka, and all three were named together in the starting XI despite featuring in the same Premier League starting lineup only once last season; with them selected from the off Arsenal were able to assert control early. The Gunners led 2-0 within 23 minutes, their earliest two-goal advantage since a match against Wolves in 2023.
Odegaard, who missed time through injuries last season, was named player of the match in the Community Shield against Manchetser City and continued his scoring form by netting in the Premier League opener after scoring last Sunday; he now has more goals for the season than the single goal he managed in 36 appearances last term. His return to form was singled out as important to Arsenal's start.
Summer signing Christos Tzolis, a £34m arrival from Club Brugge, registered four shots with two on target and played a direct part in the second goal when his cross was turned into Saka's path. Tzolis joined after a season in which he scored 17 times and provided 23 assists as Club Brugge were crowned champions in Belgium, and he had two assists in the Community Shield win over Manchester City.
Odegaard praised Tzolis after the match: "Amazing, he played a brilliant game," adding: "He has been brilliant all pre-season. He's so lively. It's hard to defend [against] him. He's a really intelligent player. He always looks up and finds the right pass." Arteta also commended the Greece international: "Well, I love that a player that has been with us just for a few weeks gets this kind of energy every time he's on the ball," he said. "I think he's earned it. "I think the way he has performed in the last few games has been phenomenal. What he transmits as a player is so direct, so incisive, constantly. "He wants to make things happen and he has an incredible variety of actions in the last 30 metres. "I think it's up to him to make the right decisions. Even the spaces are sometimes really, really small. I'm very happy with him."
While the report noted that this single victory will not define Arsenal's season, the 3-0 result serves as the official start of their bid to retain the Premier League title.
