Arsenal defeated Manchester City 3-0 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff in the FA Community Shield 2026 final on Sunday, with an opener arriving inside 25 seconds. Myles Lewis-Skelly’s pass set up Riccardo Calafiori for the early goal, and Kai Havertz and Martin Ødegaard later completed the scoreline.

Calafiori’s finish so soon after kickoff shocked Manchester City and their new manager Enzo Maresca, and the match prompted discussion about the competition’s value as a predictor for the Premier League season. City’s post-Pep Guardiola era could not have gotten off to a worse start, the report stated, and many observers regard winning the Community Shield as a jinx because the victor rarely follows with a league title.

It is uncommon for the Community Shield winner to claim the Premier League in the same campaign: just eight of the 34 Charity or Community Shield winners have done so since the Premier League began in 1992–1993. That figure is presented alongside the fact that the current Premier League champions take part in the match every season.

Five of the eight occurrences happened between 2005 and 2010, according to the account, and the most recent club to complete the double was Manchester City in 2019; prior to that, Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United managed it in 2011. These specific seasons are cited as the last examples of Shield winners converting that success into a league title.

Among more recent trends, only one of the last fifteen Community Shield winners went on to win the championship in the same year. Since 1992, teams that lost the Community Shield have gone on to win the league on ten occasions, a list that includes Manchester City’s three consecutive titles from 2021 through 2023.

The report also notes examples from domestic seasons: Crystal Palace defeated Liverpool in the Community Shield yet finished 15th in the Premier League the following year despite winning the UEFA Conference League, while the Reds ended their domestic campaign in fifth place.
