Arsenal are set to sign England centre-back Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa for around £51m during this summer’s transfer window, the club reported on 20 August 2026. The move follows earlier summer arrivals Bruno Guimaraes (£75m) and Christos Tzolis (£34m), with the club having spent more than £100m already this window.

Arsenal begin the season defending their Premier League title after a campaign in which a disciplined backline, anchored by William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes, conceded 27 league goals and delivered the club’s first title in 22 years. Despite possessing seven senior defenders on the books, manager Mikel Arteta has pursued another established centre-back to bolster depth and cover significant absences.

Saliba has been ruled out for an "extended period" with a long-term back issue that ended his World Cup for France early, and Jurrien Timber is also unavailable for the opening weeks with a groin problem that forced him out of the Netherlands World Cup squad. That leaves Ben White as Arsenal’s only fit right-back and 21-year-old Cristhian Mosquera as the only right-sided centre-back option to partner Gabriel Magalhaes; Piero Hincapie’s loan deal was also made permanent this summer. Arteta favours not pairing two left-footed centre-backs together and prefers Riccardo Calafiori at left-back; academy defender Marli Salmon, aged 16, remains a development option likely to be used sparingly.

Konsa, 28, arrives with recent silverware and international experience, having lifted the Europa League with Aston Villa last season and starting seven of England’s eight World Cup matches. Statistically his 2025-26 Premier League season stands out: he led defenders with a 73.1% ground duel success rate and a 95% passing accuracy, the latter also the best of any player; he ranked first among outfield players who contested more than 20 ground duels, was fifth among defenders for ball carries of more than five metres, and recorded a 97% pass completion rate across his seven World Cup starts.

Arsenal’s title-winning campaign required heavy squad usage — they played 63 games in all competitions, winning the Premier League, reaching the Champions League final, the Carabao Cup final and the FA Cup quarter-final — and Arteta has cited the need to guard against a repeat of last season’s injury problems. After that run he said the team must be "very ambitious, very fast, and very smart" to build on the Premier League win, and, when asked about the perfect number of players, stated: "It depends on the ability and the history of those players," Arteta said. "I think there is a lot of factors that count. Twenty two outfield players and three goalkeepers of what is enough, or maybe you know more. You need to understand what happened in the previous season, the injury record of those players, the versatility of certain players. But I'm sure we're going to hit the right number to have a bit of both a lot of competition with the right level of cooperation in the team and everybody feeling important."

Chief executive Richard Garlick reiterated the club’s wider ambitions and commercial plans, telling the Times that joining the world's superclubs is "the goal - that's the ambition" and confirming Arsenal are actively exploring ways to increase off-pitch revenue and assessing stadium expansion plans. Garlick also told BBC Sport that the "pool of players is smaller now than it was a few years ago if we're going to improve," underlining the challenges the club faces in recruitment as it seeks further upgrades.

Many supporters have questioned Konsa’s likely playing time when Saliba and Gabriel return, given Arteta’s preferred back four of Timber, Saliba, Gabriel and Calafiori appears settled on paper; Arteta has emphasised squad depth and competition after a season affected by injuries. The arrival of Konsa follows heavy activity in the transfer market: Arsenal spent £250m last summer, and Konsa’s signing will take this summer’s outlay to over £150m, with Transfermarkt valuing the squad at £1.19bn.

The club remain active for further reinforcements in attack and retain a long-term interest in Julian Alvarez while monitoring 21-year-old Kenan Yildiz; the addition of Konsa pushes the summer spend past £150m and, as reported, "after Konsa's arrival, if another player does come in, expect the signing to lift club to another level."
