Arthur Fils defeats Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 6-4 to reach first Masters 1000 final in Cincinnati

Arthur Fils beat Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 6-4 in the Cincinnati Open semi-final on 22 August 2026 to reach his first Masters 1000 final. The victory came on a rain-delayed semi-final day in Cincinnati and followed a match-turning forehand passing winner as Cobolli came to the net.
Fils, 22, has now recorded a final, two semi-finals and two other quarter-finals in his five completed Masters 1000 tournaments this year, and he won his fourth title at the Barcelona Open 500 event. He has won four of his last six matches against top 10 opponents, now sits at No 6 in the race to the ATP Finals and will rise to a career-high ranking of No 11.
At 3-3, with Fils appearing on the defensive and far behind the baseline on his serve, he produced a forehand passing winner from well wide as Cobolli swept to the net, drawing a roar from the crowd; from that point Fils took control and closed out the match. The Italian was the No 7 seed in Cincinnati and could not recover after that pivotal exchange.
Fils’s progress has followed an interrupted period of recovery and change: a stress fracture in his back forced him to retire from Roland Garros and sidelined him for nine months, after which he altered his forehand and serve technique, learned to slide into his backhand on hard courts and dropped weight. He returned to competition with improved tennis but then suffered a hip injury at the beginning of his opening match at the Italian Open the week after his Madrid semi-final run, forcing another withdrawal from Roland Garros.
Minimal preparation contributed to a second-round loss at Wimbledon, after which Fils rebuilt his form; in Cincinnati he recorded dominant straight-sets wins over the fifth seed, Alex de Minaur, Thiago Agustín Tirante, described in the report as Novak Djokovic’s conqueror, and Cobolli in his last three matches. Commentators in the report noted the immense speed and wicked spin of his forehand, calling it the heaviest groundstroke in the game, and described him as demolishing the ball off both wings while serving well, moving spectacularly and maintaining his composure over the past 10 days.
Fils spoke about his mindset after the match, saying: "I was feeling great, but you just got to take it," and adding, "Some things are happening for a purpose. It’s OK." He also reflected on his approach to emotion and energy: "If I’m sad, there is no way I can make it," and "If I’m positive, then I give myself a shot, at least. When I’m sad, if I’m going crying into my bed, there is no way I can wake up and play some good tennis. If I’m going happy and blessed that now I’m able to play tennis, then after, it’s working well." On his on-court demeanour he said, "I’m a bit less crazy," and referenced Miami, saying, "Miami was nice, I was in the semis, but I lost so much energy in this tournament. I was screaming ‘Come on’, ‘Vamos’ after every point. Now here it’s completely different. And I think also when you do it, you start to do it a couple of times, the tournaments, those big runs, then you start to get a bit used to [it], and you don’t need anymore to go crazy, to pump yourself. I think I’m already pumped enough, especially with my team also. They are very pumped, so I don’t need to go that crazy anymore."
In the women’s draw, Jessica Pegula beat Iga Swiatek 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 to reach the final after rallying from a break down in the final set in a rain-delayed match that lasted two hours and 47 minutes; she will face either Coco Gauff or unseeded Sara Bejlek in Sunday’s final. The report notes Pegula is world No 3 and is chasing her third WTA title of 2026, having won in Dubai and in Charleston. Separately, the report states that Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz will team up in the revamped US Open mixed doubles tournament, that the US Open will mark Alcaraz’s first tournament back after a wrist injury that sidelined him for four months, and that Williams returned to professional tennis this summer after being retired for four years; after her Wimbledon singles return and a subsequent knee injury she will not compete in singles at the US Open and is likely to play women’s doubles with Venus Williams after the pair partnered this week in Cincinnati.
Fils will meet the winner of the all-American semi-final between Frances Tiafoe, the 2024 finalist in Cincinnati, and Brandon Nakashima, who reached his first Masters 1000 final a week ago at the Canadian Open in Montreal.
