Asian Games 2026 Day 8 (Sept 27): India win seven medals, drop to 12th
On September 27 at the 2026 Asian Games, India recorded seven medals—four silver and three bronze—but failed to secure a gold as Anahat Singh and Abhay Singh both lost their squash singles finals 3-0 to Malaysian opponents and settled for silver.
China continued to dominate the overall standings on Day 8, having surpassed 200 total medals with 119 of those coming in gold, while Japan (157) and South Korea (83) remain the other two nations in the top three; Malaysia’s two squash golds pushed it into the top-10. India’s cumulative haul after Day 8 stands at 37 medals: 4 Gold, 16 Silver and 17 Bronze, and the country slipped from 10th to 12th in the medal table with Malaysia and Hong Kong moving ahead after Sunday’s action.
India’s athletics contingent contributed the bulk of the day’s medals: Sarvesh Kushare took silver in the men’s high jump with a clearance of 2.25m; Ancy Sojan earned silver in the women’s long jump with 6.53m after leading the field for most of the competition until the second-to-last attempt; Harita Bhadra secured bronze in the women’s 200m in 23.20s; Parul Chaudhary won bronze in the women’s 3000m steeplechase in a national record 9:08.67; and Tejaswin Shankar finished the decathlon on 7,934 points for bronze after topping three of the ten events.
In aquatic and diving events, China claimed the men’s synchronised 10m platform through Yang Hao and Lian Junjie, with Malaysia’s Enrique Harold and Elvis Clement taking silver and South Korea’s Shin Jungwhi and Kim Yeongtaek bronze. China also won the women’s synchronised 3m springboard via Chen Yiwen and Chen Jia ahead of South Korea and Malaysia, and the artistic swimming duet gold went to Lin Yanjun and Xu Huiyun with Japan and Kazakhstan completing the podium.
Combat and racket sports produced multiple national winners: Uzbekistan’s Agojonova Ibadatkhon captured the women’s 57kg Kurash title and Bakhtiyorov Shokhrukhkhon won the men’s +90kg; North Korea earned its sixth weightlifting gold as Song Kuk Hyang triumphed in the women’s 69kg; China beat Japan in the men’s table tennis doubles final and Wang Manyu defeated teammate Sun Yingsha in the women’s singles final; in fencing, South Korea’s men’s epee team lost 43-42 to Kazakhstan in the final while South Korea’s women’s sabre team beat Japan 45-31 for gold.
Other notable results on Day 8 included South Korea defeating Japan 3-1 to claim men’s baseball gold with Chinese Taipei taking bronze; China’s Sun Sibei won the women’s BMX freestyle park ahead of Japan’s Ozawa Miharu and China’s Sun Jiaqi, while Japan completed a 1-2 in the men’s BMX with China’s Sha Xiaolong third. Japan took Pokémon UNITE gold by beating Indonesia 3-1 in esports; Japan’s Katsuki Hayato won the men’s marathon race walk with China’s Zhou Yingcheng second and Japan’s Suwa Motofumi third; Yan Ziyi won the women’s javelin for China; Thailand’s Puripol Boonson won the men’s 200m; China’s Chen Yuanjiang won the men’s 110m hurdles; and Japan’s Fukube Mako won the women’s 100m hurdles.
India will target athletics and shooting on Day 9 (September 28) to try to add gold medals and attempt to move back into the top-10 of the medal table.
