Asian Games 2026: Ghorpade and Shah bow out in Round of 16 as India’s table tennis campaign ends in Aichi Nagoya

Yashaswini Ghorpade and Manush Shah were both eliminated in the Round of 16 at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi Nagoya on September 26, 2026, bringing India’s table tennis challenge to a close. Ghorpade lost 1-4 to Japan’s world No. 3 Miwa Harimoto and Shah went down 0-4 to China’s world No. 8 Lin Shidong.

Manush Shah had earlier secured a bronze medal in mixed doubles alongside Diya Chitale on Friday, which remained India’s sole table tennis medal at the Asian Games 2026. Ghorpade entered the Round of 16 as World No. 76 after a 4-1 victory over Syria’s Hend Zaza and was also entered in the women’s doubles and mixed doubles events. Shah came into his Round of 16 match as World No. 43 following a 4-0 win over Iran’s Benyamin Faraji. India had previously won a mixed doubles bronze through Ayhika Mukherjee and Sutirtha Mukherjee at the Asian Games 2022 in Hangzhou, China.

In the women’s singles Round of 16, Harimoto established control early and took the opening two games 11-9 and 11-5 before Ghorpade recovered to take the third 11-4. Harimoto regained momentum to win the fourth game 11-4 and closed the match 11-5 in the fifth, finishing the encounter 4-1 (9-11, 5-11, 11-4, 4-11, 5-11). The Japanese player’s successive game wins secured her progression to the next stage.

Manush Shah’s men’s singles Round of 16 meeting with Lin Shidong began poorly for the Indian as Lin claimed the first two games 11-4 and 11-4. Shah showed improved control in the third game but Lin edged it 11-9 and then sealed the match in the fourth after a tight sequence that reached 10-10 before Lin won the next two points, the final scoreline 0-4 (4-11, 4-11, 9-11, 10-12). Shah’s earlier mixed doubles bronze celebration was therefore followed by an early singles exit.

The mixed doubles pair of Manush Shah and Diya Chitale reached the semi-finals and received bronze after that stage, the only medal India secured in table tennis at these Games. Ghorpade’s participation in women’s doubles and mixed doubles alongside her singles campaign left India with limited further opportunities following the Round of 16 defeats.
