Asian Games 2026: India wins eight medals on Day 9 in Aichi-Nagoya (September 28)
India won eight medals on Day 9 of the Asian Games 2026 at Aichi-Nagoya on September 28, taking four silver and four bronze but no gold.
Athletics supplied the majority of India’s medals on Day 9. Murali Sreeshankar finished with silver in the men’s long jump as China took gold; several jumpers were injured after problems with the take-off line and rainy conditions, and Murali was unable to take his final two attempts.
The javelin produced a double podium for India as Yashvir Singh threw 85.72m for silver and Rohit Yadav added bronze with 84.35m; Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage won gold with Neeraj Chopra out injured.
Gulveer Singh ran 3:36.72 to claim silver in the men’s 1500m, and Parul Chaudhary secured her second bronze of the Aichi-Nagoya Games. Vithya Ramraj won bronze in the women’s 400m hurdles and became the fastest Indian ever in the event, beating a 42-year-old mark set by PT Usha.
Esha Singh earned silver in the women’s 25m pistol after losing the fifth shoot-off in the final, and Pincky Balhara opened the day with bronze in the women’s 78kg Kurash. In boxing, Lovlina Borgohain, Priya Ghanghas and Kapil Pokhariya all won their quarter-finals, thereby guaranteeing each a medal. The men’s cricket team advanced to the semi-finals on ranking after its quarter-final against Afghanistan was abandoned without a toss.
China continued to dominate several events: Lin Shan and Long Yiping took gold and silver respectively in the women’s 1m springboard while Wang Zongyuan won the men’s event; China also won the mixed team free routine in artistic swimming ahead of Japan and Kazakhstan and defeated Malaysia to claim the men’s MOBA final in esports. Uzbekistan’s Kamolidinova Pokizakhon won the women’s 78kg Kurash final and Ziyodullaev Akxor topped the men’s 81kg category.
In weightlifting, North Korea’s Ro Kwang Ryol captured the men’s 85kg title and Iran’s Alipour Ali won gold in the 95kg event. China took both 4x100m relay golds for men and women; Feng Bin won the women’s discus ahead of Jiang Zhichao and Thailand’s Insaeng Subenrat; Qatar’s Hemeida Bassem won the men’s 400m hurdles; and Japan’s Miura Ryuji prevailed in the men’s 3000m steeplechase.
At the close of Day 9 India has 45 medals—4 gold, 20 silver, 21 bronze—and sits 12th in the overall standings. China leads the table with 230 medals, holding a 58-medal lead over Japan in total count and leading by 91 medals in the gold column; the contest for places five through ten is separated by only three gold medals. Competition resumes on Day 10 (September 29).
