Asian Games 2026: India women defeat Indonesia 17-1 for second straight Pool B win
India’s women’s hockey team defeated Indonesia 17-1 in their second Pool B match at the Asian Games 2026 on Monday, recording a second successive victory in the tournament. The result followed India’s 19-0 opening win over Uzbekistan.
India’s scoring came from a mix of set-pieces and open play, with seven goals from penalty corners and 10 from field play. Drag-flick specialist Deepika completed a hat-trick to take her tournament total to 11 goals after two matches. Navneet Kaur and Rutuja Dadaso Pisal also finished with hat-tricks, while Lalremsiami, Sunelita Toppo and Sakshi Rana each scored twice. Captain Salima Tete and Ishika added one goal apiece, Innes Aditya provided Indonesia’s lone goal, and goalkeeper Savita Punia reached 321 senior international appearances, surpassing Vandana Katariya’s mark.
India began the match in a cautious fashion and missed an early penalty stroke opportunity when Navneet failed to convert. The side then generated a succession of penalty corners, and Deepika opened the scoring from a corner in the eighth minute, adding to the eight goals she had scored against Uzbekistan in the opener. Three minutes later Sunelita Toppo scored from field play.
Lalremsiami converted a set-piece in the 12th minute and Rutuja added her first goal before the end of the opening quarter, giving India a 4-0 lead at the first break. Lalremsiami’s set-piece finish completed her involvement in the early scoring sequence which set the tone for the match.
The second quarter began with Lalremsiami completing her brace within the first minute after the restart. Rutuja scored her second in the 20th minute and Sakshi Rana opened her account with a field goal in the 25th. Deepika and Sunelita each converted penalty corners before half-time to send India into the interval leading 9-0.
Indonesia reduced the deficit early in the third quarter through Innes Aditya, but India responded with five goals in a six-minute span. Salima scored in the 34th minute, Navneet in the 35th, Ishika in the 36th, Rutuja in the 38th and Deepika in the 40th, leaving India 14-1 at the end of the third quarter.
The final quarter was scoreless for much of the opening 10 minutes before India finished strongly. Navneet struck twice in the 56th and 57th minutes to complete her hat-trick, with Sakshi’s second goal coming between those strikes. After two matches India lead Pool B with 36 goals scored and one conceded, a goal difference of +35.
India will have a rest day on Tuesday and return to Pool B action against Thailand on Wednesday.
