Asian Games boxing medallists to receive direct entry to 2027 World Championships
Indian boxers who win medals at the 2026 Asian Games will earn direct entry into the 2027 World Boxing Championships, which will act as the first qualifying event for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) announced on Wednesday. The federation released a selection framework setting out how India’s Olympic qualification pathway will be managed.
The BFI said it has drawn up a four-stage qualification plan aligned with the pathway formulated by World Boxing and approved by the International Olympic Committee. Under that pathway the 2027 World Boxing Championships will open the qualification process, to be followed by an Asian Qualifier in China and two World Qualifying Tournaments in 2028 scheduled for Italy and Hungary. The federation framed the plan with the stated aim of maximising India’s representation at the Los Angeles Games.
"Asian Games 2026 medallists will be selected as the main entry in their respective weight categories. The gold medallists of the 10th Elite National Championships shall serve as the reserve entry in that weight category," said the circular issued by BFI this week. The circular makes the Asian Games medallists the primary nominees for those weight divisions and positions the national elite champions as backups.
Where India does not secure an Asian Games medal in a weight division, the gold medallist from the 10th Elite National Championships will be selected as the primary entrant, the BFI said. The federation added the same rule will apply to Olympic weight categories not contested at the Asian Games. There is also a provision that boxers who reach the quota-bout stage at the World Championships but fail to secure an Olympic quota will be granted direct access to the Asian Qualifiers.
Any remaining places for qualification events will be allocated through ranking-based selection trials involving members of the national coaching camp, the BFI stated. Boxers must first earn entry into the national camp via the specified qualification routes before becoming eligible for those trials. The federation confirmed the identical selection mechanism will be used to choose India’s entries for the two World Qualifying Tournaments in 2028.
"This policy has been framed to give our boxers a clear and structured route to Los Angeles 2028, built around consistent performance at the National Coaching Camp and at World Boxing's qualification events," said BFI President Ajay Singh. The national coaching camp will initially include medal winners from the 10th Elite National Championships, Asian Games medallists and wild-card selections made by the BFI selection committee in accordance with the policy.
For weight classes that are not part of the Olympic programme, the BFI specified the national champion will be India's primary entry for the 2027 World Championships while the silver medallist will be named as the reserve. Under the federation’s timetable, the 2027 World Boxing Championships will open the qualification process, with the Asian Qualifier in China and the two World Qualifying Tournaments in Italy and Hungary in 2028 completing the pathway to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
