Aston Villa to take legal action against Jamie Carragher over podcast remarks

Aston Villa said on Friday they will initiate legal action against Jamie Carragher after comments he made on the Stick to Football podcast, calling the remarks "unacceptable insults" in a club statement. The club posted the message on social media and said the statement was signed by chairman Nassef Sawiris.
Carragher suggested on the Stick to Football podcast that Aston Villa manager Unai Emery would be interested in becoming Manchester United's head coach, a comment that drew criticism from Villa supporters. The article noted Michael Carrick's position at United "is hanging in the balance after a dismal start to the campaign." Carragher, who became a pundit following retirement from playing in 2013, works for Sky Sports and American broadcaster CBS.
On the podcast Carragher included the line "Aston Villa will never be Manchester United" and expanded on his view of movement between clubs, saying: "Surely he would want that opportunity to manage a giant again," Carragher said. "There is a chain in football, whether you like it or not. "So Real Madrid will take Manchester United's best player, they did it with [Cristiano] Ronaldo. "And there will be teams below Aston Villa, and they'll take their players or manager, so shut the [expletive] up Aston Villa fans. Aston Villa will never be Manchester United."
Aston Villa's social-media post accused Carragher of insulting the club and its supporters and described his remarks as "unacceptable insults". The statement, signed by chairman Nassef Sawiris, added that the club would "not allow anyone to stop our ascension in English and European football." The post made clear the club intended to pursue legal recourse.
Carragher has responded to the backlash on social media, saying: "It was a joke after the stick Villa fans have given me over saying Emery may fancy joining Man Utd." He also posted: "I hope these clown clips show me praising Emery/Villa like I have done for years & saying how pleased I was you won [the 2026 Europa League] in Istanbul." The broadcaster has faced immediate criticism from sections of Villa's fanbase following his podcast remarks.
Aston Villa have announced they will initiate legal action and have published a statement on their social channels signed by Nassef Sawiris; Carragher has publicly defended the remarks as a joke and pointed to past praise for Emery and Villa.
