Aston Villa withdrew a threat to take legal action against Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher on Saturday after he apologised for remarks made on the Stick to Football podcast.

The club had said on Friday it would initiate legal proceedings over what it called "unacceptable insults" by the former England defender. Carragher had suggested Villa boss Unai Emery might replace Michael Carrick at Manchester United and told Villa supporters to 'shut up' in response to their criticism.

Carragher issued an apology on Saturday, describing his language as "clumsy and wrong" and saying the comments were "tongue in cheek". The club, which never proceeded to open formal legal action, announced it would drop its threat following that apology.

Emery, who joined Villa in 2022, has been credited in the statement and reporting with transforming the club's fortunes since his arrival. The article notes Emery helped move Villa from battling relegation to establishing them as regular participants in the Champions League.

The reporting also records that Emery guided Aston Villa to Europa League victory in 2026. Those achievements were cited in context when Carragher discussed Emery's career trajectory during his remarks.

Carragher suggested Emery would be likely to want to manage a 'giant' club again and referenced Emery’s previous roles at Paris St-Germain and Arsenal. He said: "There is a chain in football, whether you like it or not," and added: "So Real Madrid will take Manchester United's best player, they did it with [Cristiano] Ronaldo. And there will be teams below Aston Villa, and they'll take their players or manager. "Aston Villa will never be Manchester United."

Posting on social media, Carragher wrote: "I'd like to apologise to Aston Villa, the owners and their fans," adding: "My language this week was clumsy and wrong. "I can assure Villa fans it was tongue in cheek but I can understand it's not come across that way, so apologies."
