Australia opted to bat against South Africa in the first Test at Kingsmead on October 9, 2026. Nic Maddinson and Travis Head were named as Australia’s opening pair as the match began.

The national anthems were completed before play, with Temba Bavuma and his side taking the field under clear skies and a sparse crowd. South Africa prepared with three slips and a gully in place; Marco Jansen was given the new ball and Maddinson was on strike to start the innings.

Marco Jansen delivered at over 139 clicks in the opening phase and produced a maiden over in one sequence, while Wiaan Mulder mixed fuller and shorter lengths and extracted movement from the surface. Mulder and Jansen repeatedly tested the openers with balls angling back into the pads and ones shaping away through the air.

Nic Maddinson struggled to get off the mark early, facing 21 balls without scoring as he left, defended and was beaten by late movement on multiple occasions. Jansen was called for a no-ball after overstepping, and earlier in the innings Maddinson was struck on the pads as South Africa made a strong LBW appeal; the on-field umpire did not give out and South Africa elected not to use a review even though replays suggested no bat contact and Ball Tracking showed three reds.

Travis Head began cautiously, defending and blocking before registering his first scoring shot: a boundary off a 130.9 kph delivery, where he flicked the ball through the vacant square leg region. Head also ran leg byes and played a series of watchful strokes, at times being beaten on the inside edge and finding the fielder at mid-wicket with a miscue.

Extras featured in the early overs, with Jansen’s bowling producing four leg byes in one sequence and an over that accounted for four extras in total. Fielders were positioned to take advantage of nicked deliveries, with Marco Jansen taking a catching position at mid-wicket during the period described.

Mulder produced deliveries recorded at 126.3 kph while probing the stumps and repeatedly aimed at the front pad corridor; his fuller deliveries into the pads and tighter lines occasionally yielded leg byes or angles that tested the batsmen’s footwork. Both bowlers worked hard to force errors from the openers with a mix of back-of-a-length darts and fuller balls.

Play continues with Nic Maddinson yet to open his account and Travis Head at the crease; Marco Jansen will operate with the new ball as Australia continue their first-innings reply.
