Australia omit Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc from England white-ball squads

Australia have omitted Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc from their squads for the white-ball series against England, with the three-match ODI leg starting in Perth on 13 November. The veteran seamers, who all played the three Tests in Australia’s recent 2-1 series defeat by South Africa, have been rested for the ODIs and, in the cases of Cummins and Hazlewood, the subsequent T20 matches as well.
Cummins, 33, and Hazlewood have been left out of both the ODI and T20 selections, while Starc, 36, has already retired from T20 cricket. The moves follow the trio’s participation in the South Africa series and form part of squad management ahead of a packed international schedule later in the season. Mitchell Marsh, identified as Cummins’s frequent deputy and the T20 skipper, has been named to lead the ODI group in Cummins’s absence.
Young fast bowler Mahli Beardman, 21, is included in both the ODI and T20 squads and could make his international debut in the 50-over format. The uncapped wicketkeeper Sam Harper and pace bowling all-rounder Lachlan Shaw are part of the T20 group, while Alex Carey, Cooper Connolly, Cameron Green, Travis Head, Josh Inglis and Matt Renshaw — players who featured in the South Africa series — are picked for the ODIs but do not appear in the T20 squad.
Cummins formally remains Australia’s ODI captain despite limited 50-over game time, having only played one 50-over fixture since November 2024; Mitchell Marsh will assume the captaincy role on the field for the ODI series. Jack Edwards, who made his international debut on the September tour, has been selected in both white-ball squads. Seamer Nathan Ellis, described as a white-ball regular, is included only in the T20 squad after suffering a side strain on the September ODI tour of South Africa and Zimbabwe.
All-rounder Liam Scott, who played one 50-over match against Bangladesh in June, is recalled to the ODI squad. Spinners Nikhil Chaudhary and Joel Davies, who both made their only T20 appearances on the same tour, are named in the 20-over group. Tim David is selected only for the T20 fixtures despite a recent return to 50-over domestic cricket.
Top-order batters Jake Fraser-McGurk and Mitchell Owen have been recalled to the T20 squads after not featuring in recent series. The full lists provided by Cricket Australia show the combined and format-specific selections as follows: ODI and T20 squads: Mitchell Marsh (capt), Xavier Bartlett, Mahli Beardman, Jack Edwards, Spencer Johnson, Adam Zampa. ODI squad only: Alex Carey, Cooper Connolly, Cameron Green, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Ollie Peake, Matt Renshaw, Liam Scott. T20 squad only: Nikhil Chaudhary, Tim David, Joel Davies, Nathan Ellis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Sam Harper, Mitchell Owen, Lachlan Shaw.
Following the final England T20 on 2 December, Australia will begin a heavy pre-Ashes Test programme in which Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood, 35, are expected to feature frequently; the sequence includes a four-match home Test series against New Zealand starting on 9 December, a five-Test tour of India beginning on 21 January, and a one-off Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 11 March. Australia could also reach the World Test Championship final at the Oval on 9 June, which precedes a five-game Ashes series from 18 June to 2 August, and the ODI World Cup in South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe that will start on 7 October.
