Ayush Mhatre, the U-19 World Cup-winning skipper and Mumbai vice-captain, underwent surgery in Mumbai on October 22, 2026, to repair a right hamstring injury sustained earlier in the Ranji Trophy season opener. The procedure followed an injury he suffered during Mumbai's match against Chandigarh on October 11, 2026.

Mhatre, 19, was making his first appearance since being sidelined by a left hamstring problem sustained during the IPL on April 18, 2026 while playing for Chennai Super Kings against Sunrisers Hyderabad. After that earlier injury he spent three months at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for treatment and rehabilitation. His dual hamstring issues have interrupted a return to regular domestic cricket.

The right hamstring damage was assessed as a Grade 4 tear, which occurred while Mhatre was running between the wickets on the first day of the Ranji Trophy fixture against Chandigarh in Mumbai on October 11. That assessment prompted the decision to operate rather than pursue extended conservative rehabilitation.

Mhatre's fitness concerns have affected Mumbai's opening options this Ranji season, forcing the side to seek a second opening pair in consecutive matches. He opened the batting with Yashasvi Jaiswal against Chandigarh, while Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Divyaansh Saxena were used as openers in Mumbai's away game against Himachal Pradesh after the Indian opener left for national duties.

The surgery was carried out at Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai and was performed by Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala. Club and board medical staff coordinated Mhatre's treatment plan following the Grade 4 tear diagnosed after the Chandigarh game.

The report on Mhatre's operation was published on October 24, 2026 at 02:57 am IST, from Mumbai, and included a file photograph credit to Emmanual Yogini. The update on his condition was sourced to BCCI communications quoted to PTI.

"Ayush Mhatre underwent right hamstring surgery on Thursday [October 22, 2026] at the Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai, performed by Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala," a BCCI source told PTI. "He is currently recovering well and is expected to take approximately 2-3 months to make a full recovery and return to competitive cricket. The surgery was successful, and as of Friday morning (October 23, 2026), Ayush even started walking slowly with crutches," the source added.
