Baloda six-for bowls Australia out on opening day of second U-19 Test
Tanmay Baloda claimed six wickets to bowl out Australia under-19 on the opening day of the second youth Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Monday, leaving the hosts to begin their reply from a trailing position.
The left-arm spinner, 18, logged 25 overs in the innings with 18 of those in his first spell and celebrated when he completed the haul; India had won the toss. The match was the second youth Test between India under-19 and Australia under-19.
Early in the Australian innings, Priyanshu Singh and Mohit Ulva reduced the visitors to 28 for two before Neel Patel (31) and Eli Brain put on 22 runs. Baloda trapped Brain in front for four, and when Patel advanced down the track the wicketkeeper stumped him; at the other end Ayaan Akram accounted for Blake Cattle, while Baloda had Zed Hollick caught behind.
After Australia lost four wickets inside five overs, Charlie Henderson (37) and Jacob Pietz (26) resisted, adding 70 runs off 242 deliveries for the seventh wicket. Baloda broke Pietz’s defence after tea and Akram had Henderson caught at first slip.
Thomas Vaseo and Patrick Sullivan attempted to steady the tail but Baloda removed the lower-order resistance late in the innings, finishing the day with six wickets to his name.
India began their reply but had lost openers Lakshya Raichandani and Sagar Virk.
The scores: Australia u-19 174 in 73 overs (Tanmay Baloda 6/32) vs. India u-19 38/2 in 15 overs. Toss: India.
