Bangladesh record first Test win on Australian soil with nine-wicket victory in Darwin

Bangladesh beat Australia by nine wickets in a Test in Darwin on 16 August 2026 to secure their first Test victory on Australian soil, despite Cameron Green scoring a century. Australia were bowled out for 284 in their second innings and Bangladesh chased the 57 runs required for victory for the loss of one wicket.

From the outset Bangladesh outplayed Australia across the match, compiling 426 in their only innings and then dismissing the hosts twice to claim a nine-wicket win, their greatest Test victory, coming days after being bowled out for 54 in a warm-up match by a Cricket Australia XI. Australia had suffered a notable home upset previously, an eight-run defeat to West Indies at the Gabba in 2024 when Shamar Joseph ripped through them.

Australia were skittled for 198 when they batted first as paceman Hasan Mahmud produced 6-55. Bangladesh's batting innings featured Tanzid Hasan, who made 101 in just his second Test, while Australia dropped five catches during the match.

On the fourth day offspinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz took 5-66, removing Alex Carey (30), Beau Webster (five) and Pat Cummins (nine) before lunch and later trapping Nathan Lyon in front to finish the innings after lunch. Those wickets proved decisive in breaking the Australian resistance.

Cameron Green responded with a defiant 104, his third Test century, his first on home soil and his first since an unbeaten 174 against New Zealand in Wellington in 2024. Green reached his hundred by flicking Taskin Ahmed for two after Taskin had earlier dropped him on 95 from a difficult caught-and-bowled chance.

Australia resumed their second innings at 161-4 on Sunday but were unable to recover, with soft dismissals in the second innings ending any hope of a comeback and Hasan Mahmud later accounting for Green when he chopped on. The sequence of second-innings wickets ensured Bangladesh could complete the chase with only one wicket down.

The twin failures of opener Jake Weatherald and No 3 Marnus Labuschagne have left their places under scrutiny ahead of the second Test, which starts in Mackay on Saturday.
