Barwal and Toor claim silver while Prachi Choudhary takes bronze on Day 3 at Asian Games 2026

India secured three athletics medals on Day 3 of the Asian Games 2026 in Nagoya, with Sawan Barwal and Tajinderpal Singh Toor earning silver medals and Prachi Choudhary taking bronze. Barwal’s performance in the men’s marathon also ended India’s 44-year wait for an Asian Games marathon medal.
Sawan Barwal finished the men’s marathon in a personal best 2:11:37 as Japan’s Yamashita won gold in 2:10:49 and China’s Feng took bronze in 2:12:13. Barwal improved his own national record in Nagoya, while Kartik Karkera was the other Indian in the race and placed 17th. India’s last Asian Games marathon medal had been Hosur Kukkappa Seetharan’s bronze in 1982.
Tajinderpal Singh Toor recorded a best throw of 20.64m to win silver in the men’s shot put as Iran’s Tayebise claimed gold with a new Games Record of 20.81m. Toor had been bidding for a third consecutive Asian Games gold after his wins in 2018 and 2022; his 2018 mark of 20.75m remains the Asian Games record and he had won in 2022 with 20.36m. Karanveer Singh finished 10th with a best of 18.40m.
Prachi Choudhary took bronze in the women’s 400m final in a personal best 53.21 seconds, with Bahrain’s Salwa winning gold in a Games Record 49.20 seconds and India’s Kiran Pahal placing fifth in 53.41. Prachi’s time was her fastest recorded performance in the event at these Games.
Tejaswin Shankar led the men’s decathlon after five events with 4,338 points, posting 10.67 seconds in the 100m, 7.53m in the long jump, 13.16m in the shot put, 2.18m in the high jump and 48.59 seconds in the 400m. Thowfeeq Noushad stood eighth with 3,676 points after recording 11.02 seconds, 7.37m, 10.76m, 1.88m and 51.80 seconds, and both athletes will contest the remaining five events on Sunday.
Animesh Kujur advanced to the men’s 200m final after finishing second in his semifinal in 20.81 seconds, having won his heat in 21.10 seconds earlier. Harita Bhadra (23.31) and Unnathi Bolland (personal best 23.33) progressed to the women’s 200m final, while Nandhini Kongan reached the women’s 100m hurdles final in 13.48 seconds and Jyothi Yarraji was listed as DNS for her heat.
Gulveer Singh and Yoonus Shah each qualified for the men’s 1500m final, finishing third in their heats in 3:45.79 and 3:45.77 respectively. Vishal Thennarasu Kayalvizhi placed fifth in the men’s 400m final in 45.48 seconds after topping his qualifying round, Parul Chaudhary finished fourth in the women’s 1500m in a personal best 4:09.46 with Pooja sixth in 4:16.78, Karthik Unnikrishnan was sixth in the men’s triple jump with 16.02m, and Praveen Chithravel failed to register a valid mark after suffering an injury while attempting his opening jump.
Through Day 3 India have eight athletics medals at the Asian Games 2026 — four silver and four bronze. The silver medals have come from Sawan Barwal, Tajinderpal Singh Toor, Gulveer Singh and the mixed 4x400m relay team, while Seema, Manpreet Kaur, Baranica Elangovan and Prachi Choudhary have won bronze.
India will contest a busy Sunday programme that includes Manju Rani and Priyanka Goswami in the women’s marathon race walk, Murali Sreeshankar and David Solomon Patturaj in the men’s long jump qualification, Shaili Singh and Ancy Sojan Edappilly in the women’s long jump final, Sarvesh Kushare and Aadarsh Shankar in the men’s high jump final, Krishan Kumar and Mohammed Afsal in the men’s 800m qualification, Ankita and Parul Chaudhary in the women’s 3000m steeplechase final, and the start of India’s women’s 4x100m relay qualification.
