Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany collapsed while watching a reserve-team training session on Friday and is in a stable condition, the club said on Saturday. Doctors will continue medical examinations to determine the cause, the club added.

Max Eberl, Bayern's board member for sport, said the 40-year-old's condition was stable and that he had spoken to Kompany and his wife. "The tests have already yielded some results, but further results are needed to determine exactly what it is and how long it will take for him to recover," Eberl said. The Belgian has been battling a viral infection since last week, with assistant coach Aaron Danks previously indicating that the illness had affected his legs.

Kompany's health issues had already disrupted his routine: he watched Bayern's 6-1 victory over Leipzig from a seated position and then missed a training session and a pre-match press conference on Tuesday, with Danks explaining that the manager needed to recover at home. Despite those problems, he returned to the touchline for Bayern's 2-2 draw against Arsenal in the Champions League on Wednesday.

After the Arsenal match, Kompany admitted that he had attempted to continue working despite his condition and had ignored the warning signs from his body. His collapse two days later has raised further concerns about the progress of his recovery.

Eberl said there was no clear indication yet of when Kompany would be able to resume his duties, adding that his absence could potentially last several weeks. "He'll only come back when he's fit," Eberl said. "We're not going to start setting any time frames. We need to find out what the issue is, and then it's a question of what the recovery time will be. We're not talking in terms of days, but weeks."

Bayern will face Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday, October 25, and the club has not set a timeframe for Kompany's return.
