BCCI eyeing second week of December 2026 for IPL 2027 mini-auction

ESPNCricinfo reports the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to hold the IPL 2027 mini-auction in India in the second week of December 2026, although the board has not announced an exact date.

Preparations for the IPL 2027 season have already begun, with franchises assessing their squads ahead of the tournament's 20th year in 2027. The 2027 auction will be a mini-auction rather than a mega-auction, meaning teams will largely retain their current rosters and aim to plug specific gaps through the auction, player releases and trades. The IPL 2027 season also represents the final year of the existing three-year cycle, giving franchises one more opportunity to make smaller adjustments before the next major squad reshuffle.

While ESPNCricinfo has set the auction window as the second week of December 2026, the BCCI has so far refrained from confirming a precise date. The board's decision on timing is expected to hinge on venue availability for the event.

IPL chairman Arun Singh Dhumal has stated the board's preference to host the auction in India and was quoted by PTI saying, “Since this is a mini auction, we are trying our best to hold it in India. The host city will be decided based on the availability of the preferred venue.”

The BCCI's recent auctions were staged overseas, with the prior three held in Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi, and the board is now seeking to bring the auction back to India. A key logistical challenge cited by the BCCI is finding a suitable venue in December, a month the board describes as being busy because of the wedding season.

Separately, the WPL 2027 auction is scheduled for October 28 in Kochi, with the retention deadline set for September 28.

The BCCI has indicated it will take a final call on the IPL 2027 auction based on the availability of the preferred venue; if those plans proceed, the event would return to India after three consecutive overseas editions.
