BCCI schedules elections and AGM in Mumbai on September 18 with IPL Governing Council seats on the agenda
The Board of Control for Cricket in India will hold its elections and annual general meeting at its headquarters in Mumbai on September 18, and the principal item will be the selection of two representatives to the IPL Governing Council.
In a notification to member associations, the BCCI asked members to nominate their representatives for inclusion on the electoral roll and set August 31 as the deadline for filing those applications; the draft electoral roll will be released on September 1. Nominations may be submitted on September 9 and 10 between 11 am and 4 pm, the list of contesting candidates will be published on September 12, and the elections and result announcement are scheduled for September 18.
The agenda will also include the induction of one representative from the Indian Cricketers’ Association into the IPL and the appointment of the BCCI’s representative(s) to the International Cricket Council.
The meeting will consider a proposal to grant associate membership to the Cricket Association Andaman & Nicobar, an organisation not currently affiliated with the BCCI. The board has circulated a notice to its member associations and will seek their views before taking a decision on the membership application.
The Cricket Association Andaman & Nicobar operates in an archipelago of more than 800 islands located over 1,000 kilometres from mainland India between the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea, and the discussion could mark the BCCI’s first formal move towards bringing cricket in the island territory under its umbrella.
If the application is approved, the BCCI is expected to begin developing cricket infrastructure in the islands, organise matches there and extend support to grow the sport; an immediate entry for an Andaman & Nicobar team into India's domestic competitions is considered unlikely, with player and organisational development to be undertaken gradually before a team is contemplated for the domestic circuit.
BCCI’s annual domestic tournaments currently feature 38 teams, and, should the membership proposal proceed, the islands could eventually become an addition to that structure.
