BCCI to meet Ajit Agarkar over chief selector role as he nears three-year mark

The Board of Control for Cricket in India will hold talks with Ajit Agarkar about his future as chief selector of the men's senior selection committee, with Agarkar due to complete three years in September. Under existing rules he is eligible for a one-year extension.

Agarkar, a former India all-rounder, has been responsible for squad selection across formats since taking charge of the panel. The job has required managing a large pool of young talent and communicating with senior internationals about their roles. The planned meeting comes amid reports of friction between the selection committee and BCCI officials.

Those reports have centred on the ODI future of former captain Rohit Sharma. The Indian Express reported Rohit wanted to remain available for ODIs but was reportedly asked by the selectors to retire from the format after the final ODI at Lord’s.

Selectors, after consulting team management, flagged an intention to provide opportunities to younger players such as Yashasvi Jaiswal following the England ODI series. According to the coverage, Rohit was unhappy at being asked to step away and subsequently spoke with BCCI officials.

On the field in that series, Rohit scored 11 and 29 in his first two innings before producing 138 at Lord’s; the report noted he is 39 years old. Separately, the Agarkar-led selection committee removed Rohit from the ODI captaincy last year, just after he led India to victory in the Champions Trophy 2025.

Ajit Agarkar remains the chairman of the BCCI Men’s Senior Selection Committee and, under current eligibility provisions, can continue in the role until 2027. Reports cited by the story indicate the BCCI is keen for Agarkar to remain through the 2027 World Cup.

BCCI officials will decide Agarkar’s future after their discussions with him, the report says.
