Bengaluru FC will host Sporting Club Delhi at Kanteerava on the opening night of the ISL 2026-27 season, with several individual matchups expected to shape the result.

Pep Muñoz begins his first full season in charge after guiding Bengaluru to fourth place last term, while SC Delhi arrive as second-year newcomers who finished 12th of 14 in 2025-26; the clubs have met once before, Bengaluru winning 2-0 in February courtesy of a Sivasakthi goal on the stroke of half-time and a stoppage-time second from Sunil Chhetri. Both squads have been rebuilt since: Bengaluru signed five foreigners including Menno Koch, Manuel de Iriondo and Mihailo Perović, while SC Delhi added five signings including Rodriguinho, Duván Viáfara and Juan Peña. Delhi reached the Durand Cup semi-finals while Bengaluru skipped the tournament, a factor Muñoz himself raised when noting Delhi’s sharper match rhythm. With neither side settled into a fixed system, the season opener is likely to hinge on individual battles rather than collective patterns.

Mihailo Perović arrives as Bengaluru’s designated target man after a productive season at Persebaya in Indonesia and is expected to provide a physical reference point to hold the ball up and link with Ashique and Williams; SC Delhi’s response is Duván Viáfara, a 6’1" Colombian centre-back signed for aerial dominance. Viáfara’s headed ability is a clear strength, but Perović, a 29-year-old new to India, can try to exploit space by dropping into pockets and dragging the defender out of position. If Viáfara wins the physical contest, Bengaluru’s attack could lose its anchor and force greater reliance on Chhetri in the second half; if Perović prevails, Delhi’s low block stands to be stretched.

Menno Koch, a 6’5" PSV academy graduate, represents Bengaluru’s central defensive reassurance against Rodriguinho, Delhi’s Brazilian forward who can operate as a second striker and drift into half-spaces. The club has highlighted Koch’s composure and passing range as European-trained qualities that suit playing out from the back; Rodriguinho’s pace and movement when turned and running at a tall centre-back will test those traits. If Koch steps out successfully to win the ball, Bengaluru can progress possession through him; if Rodriguinho drags Koch out of position, it could open space behind for Delhi’s runners. This is the central battle.

In midfield, Manuel de Iriondo — a 33-year-old Argentine who previously played in France’s Ligue 2 with Grenoble and is deployed as a defensive midfielder — will contend with Ndayishimiye, a Burundian able to play centrally or as a screening midfielder who brings stability. Both foreign midfielders are new to the ISL and experienced in screening roles; the more composed of the two is expected to dictate tempo, shield the back four and initiate transitions. Iriondo’s age is noted as a possible concern for covering ground against younger legs, while Ndayishimiye must show he can contribute beyond breaking up play. Observers expect the first 30 minutes to reveal which newcomer has adapted faster to the league.

Juan Peña, a Colombian attacking midfielder signed to add creativity in the final third, will aim to find pockets between the lines against Suresh, Bengaluru’s midfield workhorse tasked with tracking runners and interrupting service before it reaches the back four. Peña’s influence depends on receiving time and space between the lines; Suresh’s discipline in staying positioned and cutting passing lanes will be crucial to nullify that channel. If Peña gets time on the ball, Delhi’s forwards stand to receive more service; if Suresh — supported by Iriondo — can close the avenue, Delhi will lose a primary creative outlet.

Muñoz heads into the game with continuity, home advantage and Chhetri, who has extended his stay for 2026-27; Tchórz, whose side has the competitive rhythm, has said Bengaluru are well organised but not unbeatable. The tactical template expected from Delhi is to defend deep, look to hit Bengaluru on the break and wait for a mistake, while Muñoz is likely to build patiently and use Perović and Ashique to stretch the structure. Three tactical questions frame the match: Can Bengaluru’s new centre-back pairing cope with Delhi’s runners? Can Delhi’s new midfield hold a line against Bengaluru’s width? And when the game tightens, does Chhetri, at 42, still find the one chance a match like this needs?

The opening-night fixture at Kanteerava will provide the first competitive answers to those questions and offer an early read on which new signings and midfield combinations have adapted ahead of the ISL 2026-27 campaign.
