BFI lays out LA 2028 Olympic qualification pathway for Indian boxers after Asian Games 2026

The Boxing Federation of India announced on September 16, 2026 that Asian Games 2026 medallists will receive direct entry to the 2027 World Boxing Championships in Kazakhstan, which is designated as the first qualifying event for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. The BFI published a detailed selection policy aimed at maximising India’s qualification opportunities for LA 2028.

The policy establishes a four-stage qualification pathway based on the system developed by World Boxing and approved by the International Olympic Committee. Under World Boxing’s criteria, the sequence of qualifying events is the 2027 World Boxing Championships, the Asian Qualifier in China, and two World Qualifying Tournaments in 2028. The BFI has released Selection Criteria for 2027-28 as a continuation of the criteria issued on December 8, 2025, with the stated aim of ensuring fairness and transparency in selection.

“Asian Games 2026 medallists will be selected as the main entry in their respective weight categories. The gold medallists of the 10th Elite National Championships shall serve as the reserve entry in that weight category,” said the circular issued by the BFI.

For weight categories in which India did not win a medal at Asian Games 2026, and for LA 2028 Olympic weight categories that were not contested at the Asian Games, the gold medallist of the 10th Elite National Championships will be named the main entry. For non-Olympic weight categories, the gold medallist of the 10th Elite National Championships will be the main entry to the 2027 World Championships while the silver medallist will serve as reserve.

Boxers who reach the quota-bout round at the World Championships but fail to secure a quota place there will be granted direct entry to the Asian Qualifiers. Remaining slots at qualification events will be allocated through a ranking selection trial among the elite national campers after those boxers have entered the National Coaching Camp via the policy’s dedicated pathways. A similar selection process will apply for the two World Qualifying Tournaments in 2028 to be held in Italy and Hungary.

“This policy has been framed to give our boxers a clear and structured route to Los Angeles 2028, built around consistent performance at the National Coaching Camp and at World Boxing’s qualification events,” said BFI President Ajay Singh. The National Coaching Camp will begin with the medallists of the 10th Elite National Championships, Asian Games medallists, and any wild cards to be selected by the BFI Selection Committee, as per the provisions mentioned in the policy.

The 2027 World Boxing Championships in Kazakhstan will serve as the first qualifying event for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, followed by the Asian Qualifier in China and two World Qualifying Tournaments in 2028 in Italy and Hungary.
