Bibiano Fernandes, head coach of India’s U15 men’s team, outlined his plans for the squad ahead of the FIFA U15 World Cup & Festival in Baku, Azerbaijan, which runs from October 22 to 31, 2026. He said his priorities go beyond immediate results, focusing on giving young players a strong footballing foundation while building confidence and character.

Fernandes reported that the squad has made encouraging progress during preparations, with players improving their understanding of the game and working on the physical and mental qualities required at international level. He has emphasised the need for the team to form a clear identity and for individuals to accept responsibilities across different phases of play while maintaining a fearless approach.

On the playing style Fernandes stressed clarity of purpose on both ball and without it, saying: "We want the players to establish a clear idea of the way we are going to play both in and out of possession. Our objective is to develop a team that is brave in possession, aggressive in defending, disciplined," Bibiano Fernandes told the AIFF.

Fernandes also highlighted the value of facing varied opponents at the tournament, noting the exposure to contrasting styles, tactical systems and individual strengths. He said those differences should be treated as challenges to be met intelligently rather than sources of pressure, adding that the team must be adaptable while keeping its core principles intact. "For us, the most important thing is to have a clear idea of the way we are going to play, but also the tactical flexibility to adapt to different opponents and match situations," he said.

Beyond tactics, Fernandes underlined the importance of the environment around the players, encouraging them to express themselves, ask questions and make decisions while accepting that mistakes are part of development. He linked on-field progress to personal growth, saying: "First and foremost, focus on becoming a good human being, because character is just as important as talent," coach Fernandes said. His message to the squad includes patience, discipline, humility and a continuous desire to improve, with the U-15 World Cup viewed as a developmental step.

India’s U15 side, nicknamed the Blue Colts, has been drawn in Group K alongside Bahrain, Cameroon, Grenada, Laos and Senegal. The team will play its qualification matches at the Hovsan Competition Complex in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The campaign begins for India against Laos on October 24 at 11:45 AM IST, presenting an opportunity for the youngsters to gain international experience and advance the country’s football objectives.
