Bichu Devi Kharibam: from football aspirant to India's No. 1

Bichu Devi Kharibam became India's hockey goalkeeper after initially wanting to play football at national team trials, and she later made a last-gasp save that secured India's place in the World Cup second round, the Times of India reported on August 22, 2026.

Her height and athleticism were noticed, which led to the trials, and she developed her skills with the help of coaches and fellow player Savita Punia.
