Bournemouth beat 10-man Milan 3-0 after Maignan red card

Bournemouth defeated Milan 3-0 at home in a competitive fixture on 22 October 2026, capitalising on Mike Maignan’s first-half red card; Justin Kluivert and Marcus Tavernier scored penalties and Amine Adli added a late free-kick.
Sheets of driving rain greeted the match on the south coast and Milan coach Ruben Amorim stood without hat or hood; a public-address announcer asked, "How did we end up here?" Bournemouth, whose colours were derived from those of Milan in 1970, had beaten Grimsby at the weekend while Milan had recently overcome Palermo thanks to goals from Kaká and Filippo Inzaghi.
Bournemouth opened the scoring after eight minutes when Kluivert converted a penalty following a VAR review that found Koni De Winter had handled Evanilson’s header from a corner. Evanilson had been involved in the build-up and Ben Gannon-Doak had a shot deflected wide immediately beforehand, and Bournemouth continued to press after taking the lead.
Milan struggled to cope with Bournemouth’s intensity and Ryan Christie forced Maignan into a save before the home side’s pressure. After James Hill’s deflected strike was clawed away, Maignan shoved Tyler Adams as a subsequent corner arrived and was shown a red card; Omari Hutchinson, one of Milan’s three Englishmen, had earlier run into António Silva when trying to exploit a loose Gannon-Doak pass.
Hutchinson was substituted to make way for the replacement goalkeeper Lorenzo Torriani, and Tavernier converted the second penalty after a lengthy delay. Adrien Rabiot was introduced by Milan at half-time, while Bournemouth’s right wing-back Diego Moreira pushed forward and Gannon-Doak repeatedly threatened down the opposite flank with darts to the byline.
The wind influenced several moments, including an Ardon Jashari free-kick from just inside Bournemouth’s half that blew back toward him before reaching the box, and referee Vasilis Fotias drew attention when he booked Fikayo Tomori for a foul as substitute Lewis Cook was clean through. Substitute Amine Adli curled a 22-yard free-kick into the net late in the game and Bournemouth’s supporters continued to sing in the rain.
The result meant an abject return to British shores for Ruben Amorim, and Bournemouth travel to Manchester United on Sunday.
