Bradley Barcola agrees £123m move from Paris St-Germain to Liverpool

Bradley Barcola has agreed a £123m move from Paris St-Germain to Liverpool, the transfer reported on 30 August 2026, a deal that will take the France winger to the Premier League.

Barcola's rise has included notable setbacks and sudden opportunities at Lyon before his switch to Paris. He earned a regular starting place under Peter Bosz but was out of favour and in the reserves by the time Bosz was replaced by Laurent Blanc in October 2022; L'Equipe reported he was close to joining Swiss club St Gallen in January 2023. A public falling-out involving team-mate Karl Toko Ekambi — who stormed down the tunnel and kicked a rubbish bin after being substituted during a 2-1 home defeat by Strasbourg, an incident caught on camera — ended Ekambi's Lyon career and opened a pathway back into the side for Barcola, who started the majority of the remaining matches that season and scored five times, including a winner at Paris St-Germain in April 2023.

Five months after that goal at the Parc des Princes, Barcola moved to PSG in a reported £38.5m transfer that came two weeks after Neymar left Paris for Saudi Arabia; Lyon's financial restrictions were cited as a factor in their inability to replace outgoing players. At PSG he has won three Ligue 1 titles and back-to-back Champions Leagues in his three seasons in the French capital, and he broke into the France team two years ago, scoring three times as this summer's World Cup side reached the semi-finals.

Barcola's background is rooted in the Lyon suburbs: born Bradley Jean-Manuel Essolisam Addo Barcola on 2 September 2002, he began at local side AS Buers Villeurbanne, joined Lyon's academy at eight and made his senior Lyon debut 11 years later. He has five siblings, including an older brother Malcolm, 27, a goalkeeper for Ittihad Tanger and the Togo national team, and scored 11 goals in 17 league matches for Lyon's under-19s aged 17 before signing his first professional contract in 2021. On family influence he said: "It's rare but she's the one who gave us passion [for the sport]," in an interview with Uefa in 2024, while his brother told Le Progres: "Every weekend, we went to the local stadium," adding that their father "made Bradley do specific work in front of goal, and me, as a goalkeeper... he made me work too. We complemented each other well."

Pierre-Etienne Minonzio of L'Equipe recalled Barcola's first appearance for PSG back at Lyon: "Barcola's first game for PSG was back at Lyon," he told BBC Sport. "He was booed by the Lyon fans because it was just after the transfer. PSG boss Luis Enrique asked Barcola, who was very young at the time, if he was ready to play. "He said yes, came on as a substitute, and it was impressive." PSG manager Luis Enrique has described him as a "balanced person, very sensible, humble, hard-working, with great family values" and added: "After Newcastle at the Parc, he was very criticised, unfairly, and that did not reflect reality."

Barcola has spoken about relying on family when facing criticism; in an interview with Le Parisien he said: "My parents and I talk about everything," adding: "As soon as something goes wrong, on or off the pitch, we talk about it. I've got my older brother, too. "When things aren't going so well, I need to see them and get their advice. "When they tell me 'you're messing up', it's because they're right. And when they tell me I've played well, it's because I have. I don't listen to what's said outside." His father, Yves, described their conversation after public criticism: "We talked to him about it, it's the kind of thing that doesn't affect him. That's what he tells us, it pushes him to do more. "He's never been given anything in his young career, he's always had to earn things with his patience and qualities."

Observers and former coaches have commented on his development and attributes. Minonzio said: "Barcola is hugely ambitious," and later noted: "He went to Paris St-Germain for something like 50m euros, which was a huge amount considering he had only played something like one full season in Ligue 1. "It was an insane amount of money for someone who had not really done anything, but Luis Enrique saw something in him. "Luis Enrique said: 'Whatever it costs, we need him because he has huge potential.' "Minonzio added that opponents had learned to read some of Barcola's dribbles but that "he managed to change and have a wider range of tricks" and that "He has a lot more qualities than two or three years ago." Sylvain Ripoll, Barcola's France Under-21 coach in 2023, said: "He's very endearing, always in a good mood," and added: "He might seem a little reserved, but he has character on the pitch and in his decision-making. He brings something different to the table, all with an exceptional mindset."

Barcola has shown form against English clubs, scoring in PSG's 4-2 Champions League win over Manchester City in January 2025 and finding the net in each leg against Chelsea in the last-16 in the following season; he scored 13 goals in all competitions for PSG in 2025-26. He also featured as a substitute in PSG's Champions League final wins against Inter Milan in 2025 and Arsenal in 2026.

With Liverpool agreeing a £123m deal and Andoni Iraola installed as manager, Barcola is set to leave PSG for the Premier League, joining a club whose new boss has been highlighted in the coverage as someone who could continue the winger's development at Anfield.
