Brentford reach verbal agreement as West Ham accept £40m bid for Diouf

Diouf is a 21-year-old Senegal left-back who featured in West Ham's Championship opener against Burnley but has been omitted from the Hammers' matchday squads for their past two games. After breaking into the Senegal national side last year, he played four times at the World Cup this summer. Those international appearances followed his emergence at club level with West Ham.

Brentford had identified Diouf as their priority defensive target in this transfer window, and conversations that stalled over the summer were reopened this week. The two clubs have now reached a verbal agreement and West Ham have cleared Diouf to have a medical ahead of the move. The club statements confirm the next formal step is completion of that medical.

West Ham paid £19m for Diouf a year ago when he joined from Slavia Prague, and his sale would represent a big profit for the club. Diouf would return to the Premier League after suffering relegation with the Hammers last season. He made 34 appearances for West Ham last season, providing five assists.

Diouf could become Brentford's fifth signing of the summer following the arrivals of striker Callum Wilson, midfielder Mamadou Sangare, centre-back Jannik Schuster and winger Jaidon Anthony. Brentford enjoyed an excellent campaign under Keith Andrews. They finished ninth and just missed out on European football on goal difference.

Brentford began their season on Saturday with a 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur. They play Leeds on Sunday in their next league game.
