Brighton beat Arsenal 3-0 on the south coast as intense pressing unsettles champions

Brighton defeated Arsenal 3-0 on Saturday at the south coast in a Premier League match, handing the reigning champions their first league defeat since April and their first three-goal loss in over three years.

Arsenal had entered the weekend as last season’s champions after nine straight league wins and had won seven of seven in all competitions this season before Saturday’s result. Manchester City are now top of the table, while Arsenal sit two points better off than they were at the same stage last season when they went on to win the title for the first time since the Arsène Wenger era.

Brighton’s defensive structure centred on relentless pressing during periods of Arsenal possession, with manager Fabian Hürzeler altering triggers to stop the champions reaching the edge of the box. Chema Andrés repeatedly pushed up onto Martin Ødegaard, moving Brighton into a man-to-man shape around the ball and constraining Ødegaard when he dropped deep. That sustained pressure kept Arsenal under constant duress for large parts of the match.

Arsenal struggled in build-out situations, often facing four-on-four scenarios that left them short of sharpness and forced goalkeeper David Raya into more long clearances than he would have preferred. Brighton were able to win possession from those situations and launch rapid attacks the other way, turning the game into a transition-heavy affair that suited the visitors’ attacking players.

Charalampos Kostoulas operated as an all-round threat for Brighton, while Pascal Gross, Maxim De Cuyper and Diego Gómez had notable impact when given space in open play. Hürzeler’s tactical plan aimed to prevent the match state shifting in Arsenal’s favour and his game management limited Arsenal’s opportunities to settle.

Physical output underpinned Brighton’s approach: of the four players who covered the most distance on Saturday, three were Brighton players, and no Premier League team is averaging more high turnovers per 90 minutes this season. On talkSport Hürzeler summed up his instructions to the squad: “We wanted to win the small battles first,” referring to winning the first header, tackle, throw-in and corner.

There were mitigating factors affecting Arsenal’s display. Saturday’s trip was their fourth away game in 10 days, several key players including Ødegaard, Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka missed a pre-season because of extended involvement at the World Cup, William Saliba was absent through injury, Ben White was not in the lineup and Saka was a non-factor in the game. Two of Brighton’s three goals came from low-xG efforts from outside the box; Brighton’s three goals had a combined xG of 1.31 compared with Arsenal’s xG of 1.63.

Mikel Arteta need not panic, and tactical analysts and data crunchers employed by Arsenal’s rivals are likely to have watched Brighton’s 3-0 win repeatedly by the time club soccer resumes next month.
