Brydon Carse: Derby police close assault probe as Cricket Regulator continues investigation
England fast bowler Brydon Carse will face no further police action after an investigation into an alleged assault in Derby last month was closed, but he remains subject to a separate inquiry by the Cricket Regulator.
Footage circulated on social media showing Carse in handcuffs and surrounded by police officers following an incident in the early hours of August 23; he was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and later de-arrested after officers recorded his details. Derbyshire Police had confirmed it was investigating an allegation of assault in Derby city centre prior to announcing the closure.
The force said: "An investigation into reports of an assault in Derby city centre has been closed." It added: "Officers attended Molly Malones in The Wardwick, Derby, in the early hours of Sunday, 23 August. A man was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and was then de-arrested after his details were taken by officers."
While the police probe has ended, Carse's situation is not completely resolved. The Cricket Regulator will continue to look into the incident, with the regulator yet to comment on the latest development. The England and Wales Cricket Board and Carse have also been approached for comment.
The incident cost Carse his place in England's squad for the second Test against Pakistan. Test captain Joe Root said he was "hacked off" by the situation and revealed that he had addressed the England dressing room over the latest off-field controversy.
Carse was left out of England's squad for the third Test against Pakistan and the white-ball series against Sri Lanka despite being available for selection; the ECB said he needed to "work through the issues" and take time for "a proper reset." England white-ball coach Brendon McCullum also said earlier this week that Carse needed to "get his house in order" before returning to international cricket.
England are in a white-ball series against Sri Lanka, having taken a 2-0 lead in the three-match T20I series, with the third T20I scheduled for September 19 in Manchester and a three-match ODI series to follow from September 22; Carse was not selected for the Sri Lanka tour.
England have already completed their three-Test series against Pakistan with a 3-0 sweep, while Carse has continued playing for Durham at county level.
