Brydon Carse seen in handcuffs outside Derby nightclub after Durham win, Ben Stokes visible in footage

England fast bowler Brydon Carse was filmed with his hands behind his back in handcuffs outside a nightclub in Derby on Saturday night after Durham's County Championship victory over Derbyshire, footage shows, and former England Test captain Ben Stokes is visible in the background; the England and Wales Cricket Board has confirmed it is investigating the incident.
Carse had been in Derby following Durham's 338-run win over Derbyshire, a match in which Carse took two wickets and Stokes claimed five for 17. Durham players reportedly went out to celebrate the victory after the match. Carse had been released to play for Durham after not featuring in England's first Test at Headingley and is expected to be part of England's squad for the second Test against Pakistan at Lord's.
Video circulating on social media appears to show Carse surrounded by police officers with his hands behind his back and a Durham teammate speaking to him, while Stokes can be seen in the background. Sky Sports reported that the ECB has opened an investigation into the episode.
Reports indicate Carse was briefly detained and later released without charge, and the circumstances that led to the police intervention remain under investigation. The footage and preliminary reports do not set out what prompted the police response.
Stokes' presence in the footage follows an earlier nightclub incident this summer in which he and England seamer Gus Atkinson were investigated by the ECB after being present at the Rex Rooms nightclub in Chelsea following England's first Test against New Zealand at Lord's. That earlier probe found Stokes was not involved in the altercation and did not witness it.
The ECB concluded in that earlier matter that Stokes and Atkinson were not guilty of serious wrongdoing but both received written warnings over their conduct and the breach of team protocols. There is no suggestion in reports that Stokes was involved in what happened to Carse on Saturday night.
Carse's immediate situation will be determined by the outcome of the ECB probe and whether it affects his availability for England's second Test against Pakistan at Lord's; the ECB has said it will provide a further update when possible.
