Brydon Carse will not face charges after Derbyshire police drop assault probe

Brydon Carse will not face any charges after Derbyshire police dropped an investigation into an alleged assault in Derby city centre last month.

Carse was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly during a night out with his Durham teammates following Durham’s County Championship win over Derbyshire, an incident that contributed to him being dropped from the England squad for their 3-0 Test series win over Pakistan. He had been a non-playing member of the squad for the first Test at Headingley before being released to play for Durham, who beat Derbyshire by 338 runs to close in on promotion from Division Two, which has since been secured.

Images circulated on social media the day after the game on Sunday 23 August showed Carse in handcuffs surrounded by police officers. Those images prompted Derbyshire police to confirm that a man had been arrested outside Molly Malone’s bar the following day. The force subsequently issued further statements about the incident.

“A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly in Derby city centre on Saturday night,” said the police. “However the man was de-arrested shortly afterwards having agreed to leave the area.”

On the following Wednesday Derbyshire police added: “We are investigating allegations of an assault in Derby city centre. No arrests have yet been made and the investigation is ongoing.” The Guardian has learned that the matter is now closed, however, with no action to be taken.

Carse was left out of the England white ball squad for this month's two T20 and one-day international series against Sri Lanka despite being available for selection. England coach Brendon McCullum said this week that Carse had to “work through the issues” that followed his arrest.

The Cricket Regulator will carry out a separate inquiry to decide whether Carse will face disciplinary action from the England and Wales Cricket Board, who employ him on a two-year central contract that has a further 12 months to run.
