Buttler becomes leading T20 run-scorer as Super Giants thrash Welsh Fire at Old Trafford

Jos Buttler became the all-time leading run-scorer in T20 cricket as Manchester Super Giants beat Welsh Fire by nine wickets at Old Trafford in The Hundred on 5 August 2026. He passed Kieron Pollard's record of 14,803 by launching the first of three consecutive sixes off Duan Jansen.

Welsh Fire posted 155-4 from their 100 balls, with Matt Short scoring 71 (47) and Phil Salt 48 (37); Gus Atkinson finished with 2-12. Manchester Super Giants replied with 161-1 in 69 balls, Tim Seifert 62* (36) and Buttler 51* (20); Cook returned figures of 1-20 in the chase.

Fire captain Phil Salt elected to bat and opened with Short, the pair putting on 125 for the first wicket. Salt struck 48 from 37 and Short 71 from 47, the two combining for 11 fours and five sixes before Salt was caught in the deep off Josh Tongue from the 83rd ball.

After Salt's dismissal Fire lost four wickets for 13 runs: Short was caught at long-on off Paul Walter, and later Jordan Cox and Tom Kohler-Cadmore were out when they found boundary fielders off Gus Atkinson, leaving the visitors 155-4 at the end of their innings.

Manchester Super Giants began their chase with Seifert and Paul Walter adding 74 from 35 balls. Walter made 37 from 18 deliveries, including a sequence of five consecutive boundaries off Duan Jansen and Rachin Ravindra, having been included after Aiden Markram withdrew for personal reasons.

Ben Kellaway produced a noteworthy piece of fielding on the mid-wicket rope, throwing the ball up as he stepped over the rope and stepping back on the field to collect it to remove the towering opener. Buttler, aged 35, finished unbeaten on 51 from 20 balls with two fours and six sixes and sealed the match with back-to-back sixes down the ground off Lockie Ferguson as Super Giants reached the target of 156 with 31 balls to spare.

The victory moves Manchester Super Giants into third place, four points behind Welsh Fire in second. London Spirit will face MI London at Lord's on Thursday, with the women's match scheduled for 15:00 BST and the men's match for 18:30 BST.
