BWF Worlds: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty beaten in Delhi quarter-finals

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty were defeated 18-21, 9-21 by China's Liang Wei Kang and Wang Chang in the men's doubles quarter-finals of the BWF World Championships at Delhi's Indira Gandhi Stadium on August 21, 2026. The match lasted 36 minutes and ended the Indian pair's bid for a home medal.
The Indian duo had struggled for rhythm and consistency throughout the contest, leaving large numbers of home supporters disappointed. Singles stars including PV Sindhu and Ayush Shetty had already exited before the quarter-final stage, but India’s run of winning a World Championships medal since 2011 remained alive thanks to Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly reaching the semi-finals after beating fourth seeds Jia Yifan and Zhang Shu Xian earlier in the day. Satwik and Chirag’s recent activity had been limited: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy’s shoulder kept them out of action for more than a month, their last completed match came in May and they withdrew from the Japan Open in June.
The Indian pair offered little of the customary fight and were unable to sustain the pressure against Liang and Wang, who kept exchanges flat and denied the Indians the space to launch attacking shots. Liang and Wang’s control in the forecourt repeatedly put the Indians on the back foot. The Chinese combination converted chances efficiently and did not allow momentum to swing back to the hosts.
Satwik and Chirag led 15-12 and later 18-16 in the opening game while appearing to control the rallies, but Liang and Wang produced a five-point run to clinch the first game. In the second game the Chinese pair pulled away as the Indians made numerous forecourt errors and were overwhelmed over extended stretches. Having already played a deciding match in the previous round, the physical toll on Satwik and Chirag was apparent on the second consecutive day of competition.
Earlier, Satwik and Chirag had looked rusty in their pre-quarter-final against Malaysia’s Junaidi Arif and Roy Kim Yap, edging that match 21-23, 21-19, 21-17. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy said he had recovered well but that the shoulder issue remained on his mind when he went for his shots on Thursday, a factor visible in his performance on Friday. The tall shuttler, known for his powerful smashes, was far from his best in Delhi.
The defeat deprives the Indian men’s doubles pair of a chance to add to their tally of two World Championships medals and will be disappointing given the opportunity to succeed on home soil. Satwik and Chirag will now seek to regain their peak form before they head to Japan to defend their Asian Games gold medal.
